Common sayings that are wrong or butchered

I recall reading this in the Reader's Digest many years ago, and I never forgot it. Seems the author was from South of the Mason Dixon and moved North.

He said a saying they had up there was "It'll cost you a nominal egg". It didn't make sense to him, until someone told him that what they were really saying was "It'll cost you an arm and a leg".

Now I need an interpreter for this thread. I remember being a kid on vacation and playing in the pool and another kid from the south with an accent asked if I had “fans” on my feet. I said what about 3 times before I realized he was talking about fins.

I once heard a laborer on a masony crew asking if anyone had a "spaborench"
What he was asking for was a spark plug wrench...!

When I was in grade school, the teachers would call a record player a victrola. I'm not so old that actual Victrolas were still in common use. :ROFLMAO:

I'll take your word for it that southerners don't make fun of northerners' speech patterns, but you have to admit that Yankees get blamed for anything southerners don't like.

Not to drift too far off topic, but what's the deal with all day breakfast? I'll admit that I'm not a big one for most breakfast fare, and would really like it if restaurants served lunch fare before 10:30-11am. BK sold some burgers in the morning for a while, but don't think they do anymore.
Growing up we called it ‘breakfast for supper’ at home. It was a nice change every once in a while. Or maybe Mama just needed to go grocery shopping? 😁

The Orca, which is related to the porpoise, is not a whale, though we call them "Killer Whales." This is because the earliest descriptions of the creature, were from Latin based languages. These languages reverse the order of attributes to a term. A correct translation would be "Whale Killer."

I remember scrambled eggs for supper a few times. I always whined (only to myself) because I didn't really care for eggs.* Looking back, it was probably just as you say...

Mama just needed to go grocery shopping
I didn't realize how lucky I was to always have clean, neat clothes, food on the table three times every day... even something for dessert every night.

* It's just been in the last few years that I've really developed a taste for eggs. That started when I brought home my first laying hens.
