Is it OK to use a come-a-long to secure your load? I used to see it done quite a bit but not anymore. I know you are not supposed to wrap the cable but from point to point is it OK?

a pile of 2x4's not best tool but would work

cheap cable come-a-longs are only rated for pulling not shock loads that are associated with securing a load to a truck/trailer. Go to TSC or AW direct and buy a few good straps it could save someone's life.
I used a come-a-long like a load binder on chains to secure loads a couple of times, it is a bad idea, especially with all the cheap junk ones out there. I prefer chains and binders for equipment and good ratchet straps for materials.
