I've rebuilt the engine in my Colt tractor. How long should the typical break-in period be? Is an hour enough before I start plowing snow or subjecting it to heavy load at a constant RPM? I've got about 45 minutes of run time on it now, varying the throttle levels throughout. Gave it an oil change, kinda surprised at how dark the oil was. I expected some darkening due to the new rings setting in, but not that much. Seems to start and run good, though. No more knocking, valve noise or backfiring like it was before the rebuild.

It has a hydrostatic rear end - what type of fluid should I run? I've received answers from the different repair shops and tractor supply shops of Ford ATF, the clear hydraulic fluid, or 20W-50 motor oil. It looks like what is in it now is a heavy gear lube / motor oil.

Also, I've not found many websites dealing with attachments or restoration for Colts. I wouldn't mind getting the mower attachment for it. Now it's used for plowing snow, smoothing out stone driveways and pulling lawn rollers.

The Colt tractors were bought by Case in the 60's. I know the Cases take 15w40, or 20w40 hydro oil in the system. I would think any attachments from an early Case would work.[pre '69] I do see stuff come up on ebay once in a wile.

my wheelhorse hydrostatic transmission takes 30w oil.....
