the state of Colorado has signed a bill Tuesday making Colorado the first state to ensure farmers can fix their own tractors and combines with a “right to repair” law — which compels manufacturers to provide the necessary manuals, tools, parts and software.

Let's hope this catches on fire. Even 1 state will make the OEM begin to open the tool bx a bit....

Most likely, 1 state will encourage the OEM to take them to federal court. Interstate commerce places this constitutionally in federal territory.

I don't like it either, but don't get too excited about how individual states approach problems. The lawmakers know they don't have the authority, but this makes them look good to voters without actually fixing anything (no pun intended).

You can make book on JD jacking the cost of manuals and proprietary software to the point where farmers will be crying 'uncle'.

Not something that has ever concerned me as none of my tractors have electronic controls.

....forcing the manufacturers to raise price of parts and such to compensate for the loss in revenue and some 300% more , We had it already with the Obamacare, remember prices of health insurance before?
They are not stupid, they will keep their profit either way and make even more money.

Finally, something positive. Lots of folk have been wanting this for a long time. There are a ton of decent half-worn Ag tractors just sitting because the big companies would rather sell new. Tools too.

Maybe the new law will get challenged or even ignored, but this is still a good start.

Maybe we can get "right to repair" extended to other things as well as tractors. Maybe even get the right to fix our own machines, outbuildings, and homes. How sweet that would be.

I don't know where you live but I can do any work on my house or outbuildings and do so legally.

Yup, that's a guaranteed thing for sure, JD and Apple are are on the same page, JD I don't need so I'd never buy one, Apple you couldn't pay me enough to own something of theirs.

Another thing that some brands are doing is disabling some options after a set amount of time. Cat did that on their graders for example on an articulated grader. The machine used to articulate when travelling allowing it to steer sharper. After a couple of years/hours it stopped articulating so they brought it into the shop to get it fixed. "Nope, that's an option that has been disabled after the trial period, give us $5K and we'll enable it " They get you hooked and then disable it.

On another somewhat similar note, Apple is getting worse for making their stuff propritary (sp). Latest is making the switch on their newest laptop that turns the screen off when you close it tied to the laptop via serial numbers so the laptop won't work if you replace a $5 hall effect sensor.

I live in the rural Rocky Mountains, and it is good to know that there are still places that you can work on your own property legally. In a lot of Colorado building a barn, an addition, or even just normal maintenance like replacing a roof or deck requires getting a permit.
Instead of a "right to repair", just fixing up your own place can mean expensive hoops to jump through & do-nothing jobs to justify.
