Cold start

   / Cold start #11
i just bought a new DK45SE HST cab tractor, and im having the dealer install a lower radiator hose heater in the tractor. this will help things get heated up faster. The dealer has also suggested that up here in north idaho, a magnetic heater attached on the transmission (and bungee strapped on) would help ALOT with the real cold days. gets the transmission fluids moving easier. i have noticed the tractor sounding harsh at the dealer..but it was real cold that morning. after it warmed up a bit..it sounded nice. He said that others have told him that this combination has worked great

When I had my DK-35se/hst it sounded noisy on start up. Dealer said and people on TBN said same thing- it is the nature of the beast. I suggest starting with the throttle at it's absolute minimum rpms, while starting and at warm up. Block heaters and trans heaters will accomplish about the same as a warm barn/garage. Proper winter fuel mix is essential too; and Power Service or Red Line Diesel Catalyst can reduce the tendency for excessive start- up 'knocking' by reducing wax build up and by breaking down any water molecules to microscopic size which can become part of combustion vs. their attempts to reduce same.
I like to run Amsoil's 5W-30 Diesel oil in my machine, (now a DK40se/hst), after initial 50 hour oil/filter change.
Fuel additives and proper winter fuel mix help quiet noisy injectors too. They will tend to clack like crazy until they have full pressure and lubrication throughout their body/housings/moving parts.
Note my DK40 is not really any quieter than the Dk35 was, even though/ in-spite of it having one more cylinder.

If I remember the manual on the mahindra 2816 hst, it recommends not idling or starting in cold weather with the rpms any lower then 1500rpm. It will idle as low as 900, but I ramp it up to 1500 as the manual says. Low rpm I believe may also mean low engine oil pressure. What do others idle their tractors at when cold? In fact, the only place the manual recommends idling the engine any lower then 1500 is when engaging the power take off, and after towing the tractor on a trailer to ensure the transmission works properly upon start off. What do others do?

My DK 45 starts with ease, it's a great cold weather tractor.

I start the 45 at about 1100rpm's then cut back when warm.
