Yup another food thread :D

Years ago an old fellow vendor at my farmers market who originally came from Maine gave me some of those green and purple striped Italian pole bean seeds. Dragon Tongue was the name we always called them at market. Don't know if that's exactly right but it always made them a big seller with the kids.

Anyhow he also turned me onto a cold bean sandwich. Whole cooked beans on a good bread slathered in mayo and seasoned with just salt and pepper. It has become a summer tradition with me. Just picked some purple string beans so that was my lunch today

Of course flat beans wont roll off the bread. ;)

Also cooked pot of yellow squash, green zucchini with chopped tomato, and added in lots of fresh cut rosemary, golden marjoram, and greek mountain oregano from my porch herb garden.

So my garden is on a roll now.

Anybody else got a seasonal favorite to share?

Oiled and grill roasted chilies stuffed with jack cheese is another! :D

My grandmother always made us bean sandwiches, but they were baked beans, a little mustard and of course a slab of the brown sugar coated salt pork she cooked on top of the beans...that's what I think of when I think bean sandwich, and that's tasty right there, brings me right back to my childhood!!! :)

On the topic of in-season meals...the collard greens will be ready any time, those get simmered with carrots, onions, smoked hocks, chicken broth and cider vinegar, just a dash of salt, pepper, and tabasco....mmmmm. Fried green tomatoes with remoulade sauce will be in order soon too...ok, I'm hungry now, gonna go cook dinner...lol

Pinto beans, mustard, onion, and bread sandwich is a little slice of heaven.:licking: I've never had green bean sandwiches like you described DFB, but I sure do like Kentucky Wonder beans that are as you described without the purple stripes. Most cans of Kentucky Wonders also have them labeled as Italian beans too. I know I'm a bit odd, but I used to eat mustard sandwiches and mustard/onion sandwiches. I'd even go the the garden and pull a fresh onion and eat it sprinkled with salt and a couple of slices of bread.

My favorite sandwich now is pastrami and swiss on dark rye. I never had that when I was a kid. Subway's BMT ain't bad either.:D

Many years ago when I was a kid, We would ride out with a Pinto Bean sandwich, just bread, mayonnaise & beans.
yes it was a real treat. 2 Other treats on the trail was lettuce, with salt and the biggie was canned Peaches.
