I was reading this book - the name escapes me now, prolly one of Frederick Forsyth's - and the hero was drinking his coffee the Navy way, with a pinch of salt. Well, I tried it once and it actually became a habit. I am very particular about my coffee, I prefer to buy vacuum packed German imports, but I am always open to an experiment.

My former colleague would put honey in her coffee, I tried it few times and it did not leave a lasting impression - unlike the pinch of salt:)

Also while ago I started to put milk in the mug first and let the pouring coffee stir it up - yep, an engineer cooking, that's me:D

I can't say that I've tried salt in my coffee. I personally prefer a little shot of dark rum (you can put it in before or after the coffee). Maybe some Bailey's, that's pretty good too.
I'd like to be more particular about my coffee, but I drink most of it at work, out of a vending machine (of course I use no rum at work). It is merely a source of caffeine in that environment.

Watch! Anytime soon now were going to be debating over on "Some people are pigs".
They'll most likely be saying salt in coffee is good for snow on roads, and rum destroys them(roads).:laughing::laughing:

I've got a cousin (quite a joker) that replaced the sugar with salt in his sister's new home w/ new husband. The new husband drank coffee with salt in it for about 3 months before they figured out what was going on. He said he did'nt have the heart to say anything, but sure wondered why she had not learned anything from her mother, seeing as all her meals, etc. are excellent.

P.S. I'd never had made it 3 months LOL!

I'm not really clear about when that pinch of salt is added to your coffee. Was it added to the cup after the coffee was brewed, or was it added to the coffee grounds before brewing? We don't do it, but I can remember when my mother put a pinch of salt in the coffee grounds before brewing it in the old stove top percolator.

I add it to brewed hot coffee, at work to a cup of Nescafe's Taster's Choice.

Never try salt in my coffee, always been instant Maxwell House type...just like TX. tar roads this time of year..hot and black. ;)

Knew logger who put about 5 or so helmlock needles in his coffee cup, said it gave it little more bitter/strong taste which help on cold mornings.

I don't remember why, but when I was a kid, I remember my grandmother adding some eggshell to the grounds in thier drip coffee maker. I do not remember if it was because of hard water or something. I didn't drink coffee then, so I never asked.

As I recall, the eggshell was used when boiling a pot of coffee...the old no-drip, no-perc way. Just put coffee in pot with water and boil. Was told the eggshell was added to "settle" the grounds to the bottom, so there would be fewer grounds in the cup when poured.

My grandmother in law makes coffee so strong that the spoon stands straight up (not really) - but a little salt takes away some of the bitterness and makes it somewhat drinkable.

Like others have mentioned I was always told to sprinkle a little on the grounds in the coffee maker prior to brewing. I tried it but I honestly did not think it improved on good coffee so I started buying better coffee:p

sonofagun...you are kidding right ? You are picky about your coffee and you drink instant coffee..Nescafe ? You are a kidder...:)

You beat me to it! I was gonna bust on 'im about that too. I've never had any form of instant coffee that I thought was anything like fresh brewed.

I'm thinking maybe some salt in hard water might help the taste of coffee, but I do know that the water aboard ships is distilled and then "stuff" added back to give it the proper taste. Pure distilled water is YUK!:p

I used to be stationed with another Navy Chief who put six sugar cubes into a cup of coffee. We called him the "six-lump-chump." His hobby was cake decorating, and he definitely had a sugar fixation. His cakes, however, were awesome!

I love my coffee fresh-brewed and pure: no milk, cream, sugar, or flavorings.

My parents do the eggshell thing, but not the salt. I used to work with some arab folks. Their coffee was strong enough to keep ya up for days!!!

never heard of the "Pinch of salt" in coffee but do recall a small Czech Bistro in Edmonton that made some of the best coffee I've ever drank.

The Schnitzel was also superb!

Wow this is a blast from the past....

My father ate boiled eggs with burnt toast and coffee almost every work day... I think on the weekends mom would make him fried eggs, bacon and burnt toast... He either used a perculator or just boiled the grinds in a pot. I remember the egg shells and grinds at the bottom of the pot. (he didn't clean up after breakfast) I didn't know why he put the egg shells in the coffee but I guess it was to cut the bitterness.

My wife turned me on to dark roast coffee before we were married. It's always brewed strong by American standards. There's the odd occasion where we'll throw a spoonful of blueberry flavored coffee into the brew but it's almost always Starbucks French Roast brewed plain, good and strong.

One of the guys here at work brought back some coffee from India. It had chicory in it...bad stuff..

I was waiting for somebody to mention it. The free office coffee I have here is not drinkable - at least not for me - and instant coffee is good, especially Nescafe. But still, it is a European thing, instant coffee is much more common over there and for hiking/hunting trips it is the best.

In America it is a symbol more than anything else. Symbol of neglected man, maybe? I talked about it with my new colleague and she said: "Instant coffee, you must be bachelor" When I told her I have 3 kids and been married for 16 years, she couldn't believe it.

I'm with you Jim...I just drink my coffee black and fresh brewed..if it sits for more than 30 minutes it is not for me. I can't stand Starbucks coffee..it tastes burnt to me and my Mrs.:)

I believe all American coffee tastes burnt - somebody explained to me that the beans are roasted more/longer over here. The best over the counter I found the light roast at Caribou, but I never experimented with any double late soya mocha vienna schnitzel or whatever it is called.
