Your problem is not unlike ones that I have had with my Kubota B1550D during the last 3 years. I had the clutch in my unit fail 3 times when chunks (bits of metal and damper springs) broke from the clutch friction plate and lodged in the mechanism. The first two times I had the repair done in tractor shops. To split the tractor is really not a big deal if you are properly equipped to do the job. As I recall, I only payed for 4 hours labor in one shop and 5 hours in the other. The last time I split the tractor myself since it seemed so very easy, but I wish I hadn't. It's definitely not a job for a half-blind 75 year old guy like me with arthritc fingers and knees! If it happens again, I'll let a pro do it!
My advice is while you are into the guts of the tractor, replace the clutch pilot bearing and the swivel joint at the transmission end of the propeller shaft (if your tractor is so equipped).
