Clunk noise when engaging MWFD

I have a JD 4310 with an e-power reverser. It clunks 2-3 times when I engage the MWFD. Any thoughts? Big repair? The noise appears to come from the front of tractor. It will clunk while running sometimes. It just started happening and will not be running until I get the experts advice on TBN. Thanks in advance.

I'm far from being an expert but I would have a close look at those u-joint for a starter and then again, maybe you already did.

Hi,
I have a 4310 with the same problem. Had it into the shop. Look at the shaft that goes to the front pinon (?) shaft comimg out of the transfer case. There is a sleeve like that slides onto it. Well the shop told me I could replace the pinon gear because they get stripped on the end where that sleeve goes or they could weld it together. I opted for the cheaper fix. Got it welded.

Hi,

Not sure about the 4310 but the 3x20 series has a bolt that preloads the front axle that if it gets too loose, you will get a clunk. Might want to check the manual to see if yours has that same style setup.

Thanks for the info. The shop wants $1400.00 to fix. Is there any danger or serious disadvantage to having them weld the piece.

Hi Mike,
Sorry about taking so long to get back. I just found message. I did not have any problems with the weld other than once in awhile it will crack loose. I just weld it again. I do plan on pulling front end next summer. I found a local machine shop that rebuilds shafts. Can't say that I have been 100% happy with the front end of this tractor. Both wheel seals leaked and the pinon gear issue. Hope this helps.
