Driving home today....skies are sort of dark...raining.

Radio says there is a tornado on the ground, north of Shabbona and headed north-east.

That is right towards my farm!!!! We figure it went about 1/2 mile to the south, and so far as we know there has been no property damage or injuries in the area. Perhaps it never actuallyu touched down.

That is the closest I ever want to be again to a tornado. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Been there, done that. Don't ever want to do it again. Actually, that has happened on three occasions when a twister came close.

The first time I was visiting some relatives, and for some dumb odd reason I said I wanted to see a tornado before I die. Well, guess what. That night we are in a tornado warning. I could hear the tonado sirens going off in the city. It was a long night. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

There wasn't really anything unusual about the second. See tornado warning on TV and head for basement. I don't think it ever touched down.

The third time I was at the city marine when I looked at the sky to the north. It was as black as black can get. When I got to the city dock, I noticed something about the sky. I could see a very faint tint of green in the clouds. Remember the old saying about if the skies are green a tornado can't be far away (or something to that effect)? I was thinking how odd. By the time I got home I could hear the sirens in town going off. Sure enough, another twister warning. Again, we lucked out. It passed right by. So far, no warnings (knock on wood). /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

The news report I just saw says the tornado touched down 4 miles north of Waterman, IL. I am 4.5 miles north of Waterman.

I know the feeling. We once saw one a lot closer than we wanted to, coming straight at us. We were in the truck pulling a travel trailer, no place to go, nor to turn around. My wife was hysterical and I was scared out of my wits. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif If that travel trailer had been equipped with a quick hitch, I'd have dumped it and run. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif But at the last minute, the tornado veered off course and missed us.

I've been on the scene of three within minutes after they happened; incredible damage, and the last one had scattered a family of 4 and their home all over their pasture. The father was killed, one little boy was found almost where the front door of the house had been, one was perhaps a hundred yards from there, and the mother was on the other side of a creek that was over a hundred yards from the house. The three of them recovered but were in the hospital a long time. They had horses in the pasture, goats and rabbits in a small shed not 50' from the house, and not a thing was damaged or appeared to have been touched except the house.

And I, too, hope to never see another one.

It's wierd, Dave, but as I was pulling out of the parking lot at work today, they said there was a tornado watch in DeKalb County, and I thought, I wonder if Dave heard about that. I guess you did. Glad to hear it missed you.
