:shocked:I just woke up and I had only a few minutes before the store would close and drove a little faster up our driveway when all of a sudden three deer ran out in front of me. A car does not stop to good on gravel and ended up just inches away from one of my power poles so talk about a wake up call. I could just picture my wife now saying "was it worth getting some beer before it turned to Sunday?"

I have that "deer" problem here too. One jumped across my hood once, and nearly every day, I see them beside my driveway. I am constantly on the lookout for the things, and I know sooner or later, we are both going to try occupy the same space at the same time. The silly things are about as bright as 15 watt bulbs and there is usually two or more of them.

I work 3 to midnite, 20 miles out in the sticks.
I dodge deer just about every night, but I've hit 6 or 10 over the last 35 years, most DRT, but a few have run off...
So far, all were hit with a pick-up, so damage has been slight, but SWMBO switched me to a low rider Toyota for better MPG, so the next one will probably come thru the windshield:eek:

Not looking forward to that...

I saw one coming across the field to the highway headed for the front of my truck, lucky for me it stopped and then went behind me. Unlucky for the guy behind me on a honda bike. It jumped over his front tire and knocked his headlight and turn signal off and hit him in the chest. Somehow he held it up and was able to pull over to the side of the road. He was shaking so bad he could hardly walk. Someone was watching over him.

Deer are a problem here as well. Usually Oct to maybe Feb but this week I have seen them crossing roads around 5:30pm. Last week, I saw one almost in the center of town trying to cross a street. The deer was standing on a sidewalk trying to cross the road. I wish I had time to get a picture.:laughing::laughing: There is a creek that the deer herd follows and I don't know if the deer I saw was the first one trying to cross the street or last. :confused3: I have seen the deer at this spot plenty of times but usually at dark or around dawn. It is not uncommon to see deer in town and one went through a plate glass door in a building that is in the center of town a few years ago. :confused2:

The sad thing about seeing this deer is watching other drivers, on the same side of the road as the deer, SPEEDING past the deer that was about to jump into the road. The speed zone is 30 or 35 and right in front of the sheriff's office and I saw one guy go by the deer at least 15 over the limit and he passed that deer with no more than three feet. A few other cars where going the speed limit or there about but they did not even slow down. No way they could have reacted if that deer had jumped into the road. I did notice after I had past the deer that one car had stopped to see what the deer was going to do. At least some people have a clue.

Later,
Dan

I hit one last year. At about 75kph on my motorcycle. The doctor's opinion is that I'm very lucky to be here. Broke 16 bones, punctured and collapsed a lung, filled with fluid and lots of road rash. One year later and I'm functionally recovered but likely have permanent disfiguration of my back, chest and shoulders.

On much of the AK highway, they keep the shoulders and sides cut way back. It sure is good for letting you know what is on the roadside.

That is an excellent idea. But our world here in SW Mo. is all grown up with brush, you can's see anything.
