Hi I am new here,I have set on the sidelines and never registered until I had a question.
My question..
Does the Electric companys/telephone companys contract any right of way cleaning, such as bushhogging or do they normally handle this in house ?

Thanks......... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It is contracted out in my area, and if you are a landowner you'd best watch the crews. They cut down a 10" walnut on my property and chopped it up into firewood-sized pieces. Then they dropped a 2 foot oak and left it in saw log pieces. I then made firewood out of the oak and cussed them over the walnut, which was big enough I could have had a friend with a sawmil cut me a few boards.

Most people wouldn't bother trying to get boards from 10" walnut, but I agree with you, that having that option would have made you feel better.
I put 10" walnut in the wood burner. When they get to 16" at the top of an 8' log, then they are lumber. But if the sapwood amounts to much (fast growing tree), there isn't much lumber then either.
The cutting crew may have thought like me, and thought they were doing a favor. Around here, they will chip everything, as most people want it cleaned up, and have no interest in firewood or lumber logs. The crews probably figure they can't win for losing. But better communication would help from both sides.

They are contracted out around our area also. Welcome to TBN! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Contracted out here also but you do need to keep a eye on them. I came home while they were cutting back trees on the poewr line and asked how far they supposed to clear and was told 15' well when i found them 30" from the power line in the trees cutting thats when i told them to grab there toys and go home! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif and they left and never looked back

Asplundh used to have to contract here too...
I won't even let 'em on the property anymore. They used an herbicide to kill the trees that may have caused problems, then just let them rot. It was extra work on my part to clean this area up.

So...

So, I bought my cutter... I'll maintain that right of way

Here in Nova Scotia, Canada, it is contracted out as well. Here, Asplundh is the contractor for the most part; I guess they must be a worldwide company. The only time you see the power commission guys doing that type of work is in an emergency outage situation.

I know in very rural area the company that they contract out to use an herbicide from overhead. I used to see annoucements in the newspaper telling which areas would be de-vegetized.

I had the opposite luck with the contractors that cleared our electric line right-of-way. I told them to cut more than they were cutting; told them I liked my trees, but liked my electricity even more. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Then I let them park their trucks at night on my property for a few days and got a few truckloads of free wood chips to till into my garden. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
