Hi,

I posted previous about the pricing of a CK35 HST. I received a lot of feedback about sizing up to the DK40se HST (and read about it) so I had the dealer bring one over to my farm so I could try it for the day. First, the tractor is great. I overfilled the FEL with wet hay and manure, drove it to a fence on a downhill slope, lifted over the fence and dumped. Tractor was never light in the back, extremely stable even while turning with the bucket raised high, and all at 1500 rpms. I did notice once in a while, going from reverse to forward there was a HST hesitation... it took a while for the power to kick in. Also, if I was using the forward HST to dig into a pile, if I was rolling / lifting the bucket (working it into the pile) it would hesitate, sort of jam up until I let off the HST. Not a big deal at all though, just very minor observations.

Here's the problem. The DK is 72 inches wide (the FEL). My barn is 87 inches wide (5 corridors). Not a lot of room for error at all, especially with manure wheel slippage. 17 inches may seem like a lot, 8.5 inches each side, but it's really not when you factor in steering down the 40 foot corridor. I found myself all day long within an inch of the poles (posts) and walls, and the outer lean-to's are only 4x4s. If the tractor slipped into a wall I'd have little ability to get it out of the barn... I'd probably have to detach the bucket, somehow get it out of the way, and then see if I could pull forward / move backwards until I was out. I should probably go down in tractor size to the CK35, giving me and extra 6 inches on either side... 14.5 inches each side, but I would lose the following:

1) Lift capacity. I was hoping to lift 600lbs round bales. I was also reading the FEL has trouble lifting a full load of stone / has problems with breakout force. I worry that it would have trouble lifting a fully bucket of wet hay / wet clay slop.
2) Width. CK35 is a little narrower. My property is hilly and stability is a good thing.
3) Traction. Property has very thick clay soil. When it gets wet it's like driving through muck / quick sand. Couple that with slick manure and it's a real treat if you don't have tracks. The ruts can quickly get deep. I need ability to get out (DK40se had no problem getting out and I was using R4 tires).
4) HST. CK35 likes to 'push back' the drive pedal. I'm wondering if this gets annoying.
5) No draft control. I don't really need this.
6) BH power. I have lots to dig, pond to clean, some stumps to pull (I know this could take hours for a single stump).
7) Trade-in value. Dealership told me DK's have better trade-in value.

After reading so much about the CK35's FEL and other things I'm worried that the tractor won't be able to handle lifting, and it will be very frustrating to use. Am I just over-saturated with too much reading? Do you think the CK will perform well enough? Also, do you think the narrower tractor will be a good thing, or should I stick with the DK40se HST and just drive slow?

Here are 3 photos of tractor & barn.

On the upside, if I buy the CK35 I save $3500, and then get to buy more attachments, like a grapple add-on for the bucket (unless it won't work with the FEL).

Thanks in advance for any insight. This is an excruciating decision... too much to think about.

I'd buy the dk and ask for a narrower bucket. Or ask for no bucket and the price to be lowered by the cost of a 5.5' skid steer bucket.

I sent you an email prior to reading your full post but still think the DK40 would do you better. Just drive slow and enjoy what the DK can do for you even though it's 3,500 more. That wet hay/manure mix will have the CK slipping more than the DK and may cause the problems that your trying to avoid.

If the DK seemed to handle fine, a CK ballasted will be fine. While the loader is nothing compared to the DK loader, it will handle your 600lb bales with ease.

Any particular reason that you are not considering some other brand? Sorry if you already mentioned it in another thread. But there are other machines the same size as the CK that have higher capacities and may act differently than the CK.

The DK40 has to be one of the best machines available for it's size, but if it's size makes you uncomfortable, it could be the best machine in the world for free, you would still be uncomfortable using it. ;)

I thought long and hard about getting a Kioti Ck27 or 30. One of the primary reasons I didn't get one was the FEL lift capacity. The Kioti is a great machine, and met all my requirements except for the FEL.

I went with a Mahindra primarily for that reason.

Same here, I was this ][ close to getting a CK35 HST. But between the rocker pedal (just didn't fit me) and the lower FEL capacity, I went with a Mahindra 3215 HST. ;)

1st a few corrections on the CK. Draft control is available as an option. Also, the lift on the loader is abt 1150, so plenty for 600 bales.

Now, in you're situation, I would go with the DK. You're worried about with, but you said you maneuvered all day with no accidents. Also, speaking from past experience, if you hit something, the tractors gonna win and probably just keep on going, getting it out isn't going to be a problem. A little tight in one area is, to me a fair trade off for the benefits of the DK, which you already know of. This is different than my situation where the tractor just won't fit

I have used my 2008 CK35 HST to lift many 800? pound round bales. I do have a Woods 7 ft backhoe attached to counter the weight at the front.

Hi there, I've got the ds3510 (35hp) with the 4 in1 loader and I have no problem lifting a full load of granite rock. I understand with hydro over geared there is some power loss, I've been very surprised with the lifting compactly of my machine. I've had it now for 5 months and have 80 hours on it. Cheers

I've had a CK35HST for the past three years. While I think it is a fine machine, and it has all the power I'll ever need, I have always found the loader well under powered. I am currently in the process of getting a larger DK45SE HST mainly for moving round bales and firewood. My CK is the first and last tractor I've owned with R4 tires. I live in Washington where we get a lot of rain in the winter. On the slick stuff these R4's are worthless. I'd go with AG tires if you can with turfs being my second choice. The push back on the hst pedal has never really bothered me. Although mine has been slow to return to center ever since I bought my CK, so I am looking forward to 2 pedals for that safety reason alone.
