I would say it depends on the dealer you're "dealing" with. I buy all my supplies for service from my dealer and do the work myself. He knows the work is getting done, and there is no requirement that the work be dealer done, just keep the receipts to prove you bought the filters, oil, etc.
Just as when you buy a new car, you can do the service yourself. John
