I am looking at a chi 5100 and I have a question. I have never seen one of these with the grass boxes on the rear. Any one provide any insite as to why? The machine is really clean everything moves as it should. I am kind of excited to get my hands on a drill finally for my hay ground.

Check out Fastline site. They show several 5100 drills with grass seed boxes front mounted.

I know, but I am asking why they are rear mounted

I really don't know if it would make any difference, but maybe better seed placement behind the openers? Local CIH dealer can probably have a better idea.

I was just thinking the press wheels wouldn't hit the grass seed

Think you're right, all the grass seed boxes I have seen are front mounted.

I was thinking a wide chain harrow just to drift soil on the grass seeds

Or just drag chains behind each opener. Grass seed needs to be shallow planted as you seem to know. Grass seed can be used with a regular grain drill if you mix rice hulls or cracked corn in with the grass seed.
