I have an L3240 & a Woods Brush Bull BB60X rotary cutter (hog). The manual for the hog shows to put "check chains" on the hog as support in the front end & this enables you to always place the tractor rear lift in the lowest position while mowing where it will allow the hog to float all the time like placing the FEL control all the way forward allows the FEL to float. Even though you run with the rear lift control all the way down the check chains keep the front of the hog from scalping & always maintain it at the same even height from the ground.
The thing is, in my case, the chains at the tractor end cannot hang straight because they hit the pto guard on the tractor. I have had chains on previous tractor-combos & never had this problem occur.
Has anyone else tried this & or solved this problem?
I really prefer the chains because by floating the front of the hog, instead of controlling the height with the lift control, you get a smoother cut with no scalping & there is no upward pressure on the rear lift when you cross ditches or any other situation where your hog tends to ride over something & cause an upward lift to the rear of the tractor. I have seen tractors hung up this way with the pull wheels held clear of the ground by a hog that has hung on a bank or a ditch.
Anybody?

I checked out the link about check chains referred to in above post.
My position control works just fine, but if you set the position control stop at any point above the bottom, it is held there & does not float as it does with the check chains. These chains are to connect to the tractor (Kubota L3240) at the point where the top link connects, but in one of the other (there are 4) holes. The other end of the chains hook up at each side of the front of the hog. You can then place the position control in the lowest position & the chains will "check" the hog at the same place every time, letting it "float" up & down from that point. My problem is that the pto gaurd on the tractor sticks out so far that the chains do not have a direct route from the tractor to the hog. The pics in the maual picture it hooked up that way, but in the picture, the chains are clear of the pto guard.

Have you tried it with the PTO guard removed? It's not the safest way to operate but it might be worth trying.

I have a pair of check chain plates on my old New Holland; and instead of flat stock, they are bent outward at approx 45 degree angle, which allows them to clear everything. Most that I have seen are flat, these are the first ones I have seen bent, but I have not really seen that many over the years either, so I don't know how common they are.
