Hi all. Long time reader, first time poster.

I was wondering if anyone knew of some good source for
small hydraulic pumps. It will be coupled to a small 5hp brings to
run a small cylinder. I've checked surplus center, Bailey, granger, etc.
I wasn't sure if anyone could chime in with other options.

Thanks!
Matt

Power steering pump from your local auto wrecker!

It even comes with a V belt pulley, in case you need to adjust output

Grab the reservoir if remote, and the hi pressure output fitting too. It's usually a banjo.

PS pumps are usually good for a few cc's per rev, and around 500 psi before the relief dumps.

Can't beat the price!

Thanks guys.
I must have missed that $81 one at surplus center.
Seems to be the right size for what I need. Any idea what
Size engine I'd need? I've got a few to choose from.

Thanks.

JJ, I'm thinking shaft to shaft. The one briggs I have turned out
to be only 4hp. Still cool tho because it is an almost new condition 1961. The
other is a horizontal shaft 5hp, but a two stroke. It should have plenty
of rpm. Do you think it will be enough to power one small cylinder?
This will be for a small 6x3 estate wagon set up to dump. It will have
The scissor set up like a dump truck. No huge loads. Mostly goat waste
and hay.

Thanks.

As soon as the pump is turning, you have the pressure. The speed of the cyl is determined by the GPM's, so that 4 HP motor will power the pump, and be able to pump 2 GPM using 4 HP.

A 2 in cyl , 1 in shaft, at 3000 psi, will produce a force of 9435 lbs = 4.71 ton with a 90 degree straight on push.

If the cyl is mounted at some other angle, say 15 degrees starting angle, the push force will be 2439 lbs.

As the cyl increases angle, the force increases. At 45 degrees, the push force will be 6664 lbs. At 75 degrees = 9104 lbs

From the calculations, it sounds like the 4hp will do. This would
be optimal as it is already mounted on a frame. All I have to do is
weld up mounts for the pump. The loads aren't too heavy. Being that
the trailer pilots at the very rear, it can be a back breaker. I believe
most loads will be 400-600# at most. Do you think this will be feasible with
said set up? I'm not too concerned with cycle time.

Thanks again!

Should work just fine.
