Cheap as they come toothbar

I just noticed that your outer teeth are not right next to the bucket sides. Is there less wear on the bucket or more that way? What are your thoughts on this?

The reason I asked is that my outer ones are right next to the side walls of the 72" bucket (7 teeth). My bucket also has an added "side plate" for protections against wear. I am curious if there is an advantage of mounting them like you did or if that's the way the spacing worked best?
Thanks...

Rob...my bucket is like yours. But I decided to put them like I did cause I wanted only 8 inchs between the teeth. But it put the ends short of being on the ends or side of the bucket. My dirt consist of allot of clay and rocks, so I wanted my teeth closer together. Plus I wanted them closer cause of picking up old hay off of the ground after feeding the horses through the winter. As for wear, my bucket also has the side reenforcement metal welded to it. Plus I have 3/4" reenforcement metal welded up underneight the buclet. Also, my weld on cutting edge is 3/4" as well. I dont thick or hope my tooth bar wont warp or bend my bucket. By the way, your toothbar looks good. Is it a markham toothbar? Thanks,
Cliff

Cliff, crbr,
Yes, that is a Markham toothbar fit to a Koyker 72" bucket. I presume it is a Koyker 'cause it came with the Koyker 195 fel. I bought it (the toothbar) right after I first got the tractor knowing I would need it the amount of digging and site prep I would be doing.

That is a good description of why you did what you did. I was just asking if there was a significant value to having those end ones away from the side wall of the bucket. As if you knew something secret that it works better that way.:) That was what I was after. Because if it was, I would consider doing the same. It never hurts to ask to get better performance out of your tools if there is a better way. I am always open to new ideas.

So basically it was a matter of having the 8" spacing you wanted for your most frequent use, and not necessarily a feature to make it dig better or anything like that. Is that right?

Rob,
You are correct about the spacing for my intended use. Just thinking out loud here, I dont think there would be a difference in performance if the teeth were on the ends of the bucket or a few inches from the end of the bucket. One thing is for sure, mine will rip the rock and clay soil up we have here in Kentucky pretty good. Your Markham toothbar would pretty much do the same. No dault about that. I just wonder why Markham only uses seven teeth instead of eight teeth? They must know something we dont, or there just saving themselves some money (which theres nothing wrong with that:D). I'm all for saving money, but not for cutting corners. Thanks, Cliff

looks good man, i built one for my bx23 for 193.00 and a day of running around. i ended up with teeth and shanks for a track hoe so they are some big ole teeth. i used it in and clay and rocks for about 6 months before i cut it up and welded it back together for my b3030 bucket. i found i had one weld cracked after hours and hours of use on the bx. i cleaned it all up and welded it to a new piece of metal (30.00) for the new bucket. i think the weld cracked because i did not do enough prep on the piece of removable cutting edge i used for a backing plate, that stuff is hard.
There is nothing like the feeling of building it yourself for 1/4 of the cost

I don't know what's better, but the backhoe buckets always seem to have the outside teeth at a 30-45 degree outward angle so the cutting edge is wider than the bucket. I thought that helped crumble the earth so it was easier to scoop. Maybe?

I wish I had a toothbar to deal with the Claycrete as I call our bentonite laden soil around here. Don't tell my wife; but it looks like I have another tractor project to make.
