i know this topic came up recently - searched the forum but didn't find the info i was looking for:

any tricks to changing this fluid? i recall someone suggesting that you should fill up the filter prior to putting it on ..

any other suggestions?

thanks!

Make sure you rub a little oil around the gasket before installing. Filling it first is not necessary, but certainly doesn't hurt anything and has been recommended by many for years.
Make sure you check the magnet on the main transmission plug and clean off any metal shavings that it has gathered. Also ensure that you have emptied from all of the ports, not just the main plug, but do it first then the smaller side ones (If I remember right, you have two others). Put in most of what the manual calls for, but not all at first. After reinstalling all the plugs, mostly filling, start up the tractor and let it run for a few minutes, shut down and check the level. Add as needed to get between the lines on the stick and not above the highest mark. Make sure, if you have them, that the loader and backhoe cylinders are retracted so the fluid is forced back to the reservoir before checking.

So for us Simpletons: The hydraulic fluid for the steering and loader is separate from the HST?
The hydraulic system is 7 plus qts? of? and the HST is ?qts of??type oil? assuming CK30HST
I think im gonna make a quick access chart of fluids types and capacities---it seemed kinda spread all over the manual.
I opine the manual is vague on important issues.

No, not really. It's just that they are sort of compartmentalized, let's say, and you have three plugs that you would drain. One is the main transmission reservoir and the other two are one on either side of that. Refer to the picture in the every 400 hours service, under periodic service in chapter 10, approx. page 10-18 or 10-19 depending on which printing of the manual you have.
You only refill at one spot, but drain from three plus the filter below (gray one) and the HST filter up top (orange one).

Most tractors are like that. One fill but several drains because it goes into several compartments as KiotiJohn mentioned. My old Ford 8n had one fill and three drains. As you fill and it goes into the first compartment, it overflows and fills the next until it overflows and fills the last.
The CK30hst is supposed to hold seven gallons which supplies the HST, steering, and FEL. It would also supply a BH if attached unless you use a PTO driven pump and separate reservoir. I haven't had to change mine yet, so I don't know if exactly seven gallons is the perfect amount. Easier to hold back a little as KiotiJohn advised and then top off as needed.
You mainly need three types of oil. Engine oil-6 qts., Hydralic oil-7 gallons, and Gear oil for the front axle. Need the book axle amount.

thanks for the info - i'll replace the fluid this weekend. i typically document all my maintenance (complete with pictures) for the farm restoration website (which i hope to finish before the end of summer.. it's amazing how low this slid on the priority list!)

perhaps it's a by-product of having blond hair, but i always get confused about 'retracted.'

retracted = the FEL is on the ground, and not in the air..

correct?

2 hrs of sleep is not enough

Correct, have the loader on the ground and bucket rolled all the way back. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
