I took both shields off and can barely see the damned thing. Can't get a good bite with channel locks because there's no room. Tried hitting one of the lugs with a screwdriver and hammer, it won't budge. I don't want to hit it any harder than I have already.

Tips?

I have never had much trouble on either my 1520 or T1520. I have always used a channel locks. Some kind of a spanner wrench might work better. To get a little extra room in order to get a better bite with the channel locks, you might try removing the single bolt that holds filter assembly to its mounting bracket. That will allow you to pull it out a bit where you might be able to get a better bite with your channel locks. Use a second channel locks, if needed, to hold the housing and be careful to not damage the filter housing. Lastly, you can remove the fuel lines from the housing and get the whole filter assembly off the tractor to gain lots of room. I usually put a dab of anti-seize on the retaining ring threads to help it come off easier next time.

As Toot77 suggests ..... I remove the bolt that holds the assembly to the block on our T1530 and I also do an oil change at the same time to get the oil filter out of the way. It's a yearly deal.

Thanks guys. I've been wondering if it was over-tightened by the last owner. Anti-seize sounds like a good idea.

One time long ago I couldn't get the oil filter off my Ford 1700 - just couldn't get a grip on it. Solution was to put an oil pan under it and then drive a heavy long screwdriver punching through the whole thing. THEN I got a grip!

Works good till it doesn't, then your list of remaining options just went to zero.

Yeah, I've always managed to get spin-on oil filters off with the tools I have, without screwdrivers. Gigantic channel locks (the largest made, as I recall) work good if nothing else does.

I usually use K&N filters as they have the large nut welded on the bottom -- makes it real easy. :)
