I cut by myself all the time.---Had one saw nick my knee one time when I was cutting a big tree off the top of my bulldozer, ended up driving the dozer with the rest of the tree on top a quarter mile to my truck then went to my girlfriends house and she cleaned up the nick. ---Still have the scar ! lol!!!

Was channel surfing last week and came across 'The Curse of Oak Island'...the brothers (if you are familiar with the story) were using an obviously brand new Sthil chainsaw...they were cutting some oak logs for dating etc...one brother was running the saw and the other brother was actually gripping the end being cut off with his fingers just inches from the bar...and he was leaning down and in with his head easily within bad kickback range...
...not sure where to look to see if they got berated on social media sites for the stunt...what makes it even worse is the brothers are always pointing out how keenly and prudent they are doing things in their search for treasure etc...

Saw that same episode myself... just sorta shook my head. That nice new Stihl 271 would be put to much better use in my own hands.

I guess they didnt want to drop the sample chunk back into the mud the log had just come out of, where its been for centuries as they say, or since the producers put it there. Too often I see wood that looks way to milled or not-rotten to have been where they're saying it might be from.

Anyway, back to chain saws... Im likely to be notching in some cross braces between fence posts I'm setting later today... my 11 year old boy will likely be around, hopefully de-barking the next posts we need, if I can keep him on task.

Television shows, not real life. Even so call "reality" shows aren't real life. Just what did you guys expect from Hollywood? Nothing is to be believed. Not even documentaries produced for show business.

LoL...there are people that think the soprano's was an accurate descriptive...

Most of the so called reality shows use real people, many are 99% scripted others are just injected with setup scenes etc...

The show cited above is generally unscripted and the action mentioned had nothing to do with the show's story line...it depicted two completely clueless people using a chainsaw...

These days it's hard to tell where the scripted reality shows meet the news broadcasts...!

I find that when I'm cutting firewood, and someone else is stacking/splitting it, they tend to keep working their way towards me while the saw is running, to the point that you know they want to grab the pieces as soon as they fall on the ground. I know they want to help, but they just keep inching closer as time goes on. And I have to tell them to back away, take a break, stay back, etc... several times. It just makes me too nervous to have helpers when I'm using the saw.

When I used to help put up my parent's firewood, my mother and brother would hand me a short piece and expect me to cut it while they were holding it; which my father wouldn't think twice about. They didnt understand why I always made them put it down and step away.

My dog learned to keep his distance after I apparently dropped a small tree on him while doing a precommercjal thinning. At least I assume that's what happened... I went looking for him and found he had run the mile and a half back to my truck.

Accidents will happen. I got cut pretty bad once while sharpening the chain. The table the vice was mounted to broke and the both the saw and 35 lb vise collapsed on my leg. Turns out the bolts used to hold the table together were stressed and snapped. Another time while cutting with friends one of them decided that beer and chainsaws were a good mix. As another friend was about to drop a tree I suddenly heard yelling as the drunk one was standing in the path looking to get driven into the earth. I have friends who feel sneakers and shorts are all that's needed in the summer. I have found that it's rare to find friends who have the same level of safety as you.

Most of my cutting is done alone. It does make me think twice before cutting a tree to make sure there's no limbs that could fall and which way it will naturally want to go. I normally will replace chains before they reach the point where the bar can't be adjusted to take up the slack and before I hit the wear limit for sharpening. Life is about taking precautions but not sitting idly by waiting.

And all the calls the Coast Guard got about rescuing the castaways on "Gilligan's Island."
