Getting ready to order a set of chains for the rear R4's on my 2520.

The past couple years, used a 2210 with turfs in the snow and rear chains only. these chains had the 2 link spacing for the cross links.

Just went to tirechains.com

I was unpleasantly surprised that the cost of 2 link chains are double the cost of the 4 link.

My concern is that the 4 link chains will tend to fall down into the tire lugs while the 2 link spacing would be much better. Actually, was just going to order the 2 link spacing, until I saw the price....

4 link for 14-17.5 tires - $114
2 link for 14-17.5 tires - $236

My gut says to bite the bullet and get the 2 link spacing, but before I do, would like to hear any input about the 4 link spacing on the R4's.

Thanks

I agree with you. Bite the bullet and get the more effective set of chains.

I tried a 2 link and it did not help much on my driveway. So, I traded them for these plus more cash. These work! Problem is they are very heavy and the 2520 has little clearance.

Wow!
Those are some serious chains!

I don't need anything that aggressive - my main problem is the last 500' of my driveway is a pretty good hill leading up to the road, and we get a few sleet/freezing rain storms each year. The sleet can get 8" deep or so at times - it's like trying to drive in silica sand.

I went through the same process as you last fall, ended up with the 4 link and with R1's they do fall into the tire lugs. Shouldn't be as bad with your R4 tires, how much better I can't answer.

Skidoo; Where did u get those chains? :)

I bought the 2 links for my 2520, and they are **** nice. BUT, I have yet to run them in the snow!

Deadman,

I purchased these chains through our local Les Schwab dealer! They took the first set back in exchange. I have a fairly steep curved hill in my driveway. With the normal chains, I would still go sideways around the curve while trying to angle the snow like grading. These chains do really bite into the icy stuff too. Expensive too. Cost me upwards of $500. The problem I have with them is they are HEAVY, and they are somewhat difficult to put on because of that.

Last year I tried to plow the curved area going backwards and that worked very well, so much so, that I did not put on the chains. It did not snow much last year either so there was not much motivation...

I've got those V-bars on my R-4s and they work great on my steep gravel driveway--a little tough on my garage floor, though. Regards, Mike

These are what I bought a couple of years ago for my 4115. I had the cross over typs at first. They felt like I had 2x4s nailed to my tires. Shook the **** out of me and the tractor. I called tirechains.com and had them make me a set with a cross chain every other link. These ride great and really give me the traction I need on my drivway.

I bought these, they are to be delivered tomorrow:

SQUARE ALLOY CROSS CHAIN

...and if they don't lay right on the tread, or I want more traction, I will then order the extra cross links to make them into 2-link chains. At that time, I have the option of using more of this square link stuff, or going with v-bar, or twisted, whatever I want.

If you can get by with just putting them on the front, that would save you a lot of money. I think you could get the two link v-bar and it would still be cheaper that the plain 4 links for the back.

I bought chains thinking I might need them for my 600+ feet of inclined driveway but I never put them on my R4 tires. (2320)

Just plain didn't need them. I do run about 5 or 6 hundred pounds in my ballast box with the 47 blower on the front.

Yes, it would be much cheaper, but I am inclined not to put chains on my fronts at all - this has been discussed before here.

If all I would get is snow, I could also get away without chains - it's the sleet/ice where I have the problems.

When you get Northern Wisconsin style snows, you'd NEVER ever move with R4's. Trust me, I parked the tractor last year, and used a ATV with V bar chains and it works 5 times better all becuase of the useless R4's snow traction.
