My three chains live in a 5 gallon bucket covered in used engine oil, all the time.

I have (2) of the 40 mm ammo boxes bolted to my utility trailer for storing chains & load binders. I put drain holes in the bottoms so they would not collect water.
Just this past weekend, I pulled all the stuff out of the boxes to see if things were rusting, having sat untouched all winter through rain and snow. Everything was fine.
