I have had a stihl 028 since 87 and have only put rings in it,and i burn 4 cord per year...ONE TOUGH SUCKER
two years ago i couldnt pass up a deal on a almost new SACHS-DOMAR ps6800i .This has got to be the most powerful saw i ever ran,and ive tried alot of them.Needless to say the stihl does the limbing now,and the sachs does the rest, and makes short work of it.All the loggers in our area were switching to them, until the dealer was forced to retire because of health problems.

I've a 35 year old Stihl 009L. You can still buy the same model for a tad LESS money than I paid for it in 1970.

The only time it didn't start fairly quickly is when I left the fuel mix in it ONCE. Took a while to start and to clear it out from that.

Only part I've ever bought for it was a spark plug and a 2nd bar and a couple chains. Got both a 14" and 16" bar.

The chain oiler has no adjustment. It'll use up the tank of oil quicker than a tank of fuel. So, I usually only fill it about half full of fuel. It seems to run forever on that 1/2 tank.

I have an 028 and an 075. Both saws I had in my tree business and ran them hard everyday. That was over 25 years ago and they are both still going strong. I haven't had the tree business for 20years and they are both still super reliable.

I found out the other day that Stihl has brought out a reincarnated 028 that's every bit as good as the old 028 but you can't get the handgrip heater. I may trade in my old 028 for a new one. The new one, I suspect, will last me until I am in the grave......maybe they'll cut my pine box with it!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I have a JD CS-56 and a Sthil MS250, both are good saws and I haven't had any problems. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I also have a 028 that I have owned since the mid eighties. We have cut hundreds and hundreds of cords for our firewood business over the years with that saw. Finally a couple years ago I replaced it with a 034 and have cut probably 150 cords to date. We have done nothing other than bars, sprockets, chains, spark plugs, and a set of rings for the 028. Hard to beat that type of longevity.

I stopped at the Stihl dealer the other day, after I made my post and noticed that the price of the new 028 is about the same as my old one. Interesting.

I also have an FS66 brush trimmer that is about as ancient as the 028. All I have replaced on the trimmer is a few plugs and a new gas tank.

"Stihl the one...."

If I could have bought a 028 when I was looking I probably would have. I found it to be a good size for power to weight. After reading these posts I realize a lot of people have one and seem to have good luck with them. Obviously Stihl thought there was a market and brought them back.

Had an OLD homelite before a new craftsman i bought in August. Now inherited a Stihl Farmboss 029 from my dad and it is a much much better saw than the crapsman it is very smooth in cutting and has way better power and acceleration it much better balanced, and cuts through my medium size logs like butter always started 3rd pull in cold, good saw. also someone asked about getting better power before, if you take the muffler off it will better your power and acceleration(experimented on craftsman) it will be pretty loud btu better power.

Most of the fellas like the Stihls--you have the 56 and also a Stihl and I believe it was Kyle from Texas who also liked the 56. I ended up with the JD 56 I guess mainly because I am over at the JD house now and then and really like their service guys. I will see how it goes--the saw is still in the box but will get to run it pretty soon. Thanks to you all for your input. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
