Chains Chain Lube

Hello, what is everyone using on their snowblowers exposed chain for lubricant? I've received many recommendations ranging from Motorcycle lube to Teflon lube. Appreciate your replies.

winter in Canada where I am is very cold.... often blowing at -30 temps.... many many hours on open chain snowblowers..... use whatever gear oil I have kicking around in the shop every 5 or 10 hours or so I just pour on rotating chain till wet.... last time was 80w-90. Never / ever had a chain problem with a snow blower due to wrong or not enough oil.

Since I have 2 motocross bikes in garage, always have motorcycle chain lube. Apply before going out every time. Never have had a chain problem. Only build up of excess lube over time. A good power wash every spring will take care of that. Are you running a front or rear mount blower?

Bar and chain oil for your chainsaw is pretty cheap for the volume, and works great. Many types of oil you have around will work just fine if applied every use. Just don't confuse solvents/degreasers like WD-40 with proper oil.

For the most part, I think lubing your snowblower chain falls into "the best oil is the oil you use" category.

I personally use fluid film. Engage blower at idle speed go out back and spray the chain. I might do it in middle of season again but i really dont think the oil matters so long as theres oil on there. Ill be honest i use fluid film for a lot of stuff haha its a good sticky oil.

I’ve used gear oil, fluid film, wd40 - basically whatever’s handy

I use basic chain lube on planter chains. It foams when it's applied and really stays stuck. You can buy it at WalMart now for a pretty fair price.

CRC and Lubriplate sell good low speed spray chain, gear, and cable lubes.

I always used motorcycle chain lube. It dries to a waxy consistency - attracts less dirt/dust - stays on the chain.

LPS-3 has similar properties.
Dries waxy, and lasts for months on equipment stored outside.

I have used CRC white lithium spray grease for the past 10 years and have the same chain I started with. That is with a 3/4 mile gravel road and driveway in western Maine.
After moving snow, I clean the auger and fan of accumulated snow and then engage the pto and give the chain a good coating directing a steady stream to each side of the rollers.

I used to use motorcycle chain lube, the foaming type, but have recently been using Amsoil Metal Protector spray grease.
