I don't mind answering census questions. I also get a survey from the National Science Foundation every four years asking about how I'm doing since getting a PhD a while back....I just spent an hour rebuilding a compressor controlled water valve, so maybe I should have gone to plumbing school instead. Anyway, lots of folks complain about how the government does this or that wrong, and a fair amount of what the government does is based on their understanding of the citizens wants and needs. Reasonable statistical data seems like something that might be useful in making some of those decisions. If they really are interested in you as an individual I am afraid we passed the privacy threshold a while back. On the other hand, conspiracy theories can be entertaining.
