Hello,
I would like to know if anybody knows how to price northeast cedar logs, poles, or branches. I have a lot of standing cedar and a chance to sell logs, poles, and even branches for railings and furniture. The problem is I have know idea what to charge for any of it, or if its even worth my time to do it. Any ideas?

In a previous TBN thread, I had read that NY publishes average prices from standing timber sales -- https://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/lands_forests_pdf/sprwinter18.pdf. However, I don't see any cedar prices.

Is "northeast cedar" the same as eastern red cedar?

I would contact the regional forestry office (listed in the link) for assistance.

How many acres are you talking about? Depending on the volume, hiring a consulting forester could be a good idea. He/she would help find a buyer, monitor the harvest, calculate your basis and capital gain, etc.

Good luck.

Steve

Cedar is one of the highest paying woods right now, around $500 per thousand board feet delivered, but it has to be pretty good logs. By that I mean big in size, straight, with no rot...pretty tall order for cedar.

I could have sold some smaller cedar wood for $100 a cord a year or so ago, but cut 1 cord and it took me most of the day using my farm tractor and winch. In an hours time I could have cut a cord of hardwood pulp and gotten $70 a cord for it, so decided cutting cedar was not for me.

I did have a logger cut some cedar on me though and piled it up, and because cedar logs are in such high demand, I am having a lot of people ask about buying it. By "a lot of people" I mean I had 3 loggers in 1 day alone ask about buying it from me, so beware, it is in high demand.

That's my problem I got a lot of people asking for it and I don't want sell it to cheap. It seems like everyone has a project for cedar these days. I would rather sell a hole bunch then 8 poles at a certain size, if I drop a tree I want to sell all of it.
