I advise everyone to be cautious when moving an old stack of railroad ties with your tractor. They may have some old spikes and cleats in them that come loose and fall unnoticed on the ground when moving. See photo.:(

So true... A buddy had got a brand new truck some years back. Had it about a month, when him and his wife wanted to do some landscaping. They wanted some railroad ties, so off to the lumber yard.

He backed up to the stack, dropped the tailgate, and the lumberyard guys went to slide them in. Well, there was still a spike in one...They slide that tie in, and it rammed right in to the top of the tailgate, leaving a big gash and dent...

The lumber yard did pay for the repiar, but not without some hassle.

That's a good candidate for the worlds largest tire stud. I get rail ties from time to time and will have to keep a eye out for those thing's.

Snakes. Watch for snakes in the pile. And in the tie. I had a kid (about 13 at the time), boy from church come help me build a fence around spot I wanted for a garden. We set cross ties for corner posts, and was stretching 2x4 mesh wire. He was pulling near corner post and holding tight, I was hammering steeples, when this snake sticks his head about 6" out of a split in the post. That kid took off like a rocket. I nearly fell out from laughing. Wasn't a poisonous snake that time, but any kind of "unexpected" encounter with one will make you hurt yourself if not careful.

I guess we wont see a thread on how to use RR ties to build something at Eddie's RV park now that he knows a snake might be in the wood....:D
