We had a siamese mix that ate a dime and two pennies that ended up obstructing something --can't recall how far down the digestive tract it went. As I recall, the surgeon/vet charged about $1,200 and the cat lived another 8-10 years. The surgery was done about 15 years ago I'd guess.
My concern with ER vet places is they really sock it to pet owners, IMO. My daughter took her cat to an overnight ER place near Nashville because he was blocked and unable to urinate. They tried to charge her about $2,300 for treatment as I recall. I told her to bring the cat to our vet instead the next morning who charged her normal $75 office fee, and the cat was fine.
We had another cat who needed $300 surgery I think around 2009. The vet's husband was in the office. He's a bit of a cutup and told my wife the surgery would be $300 or they could replace the cat for free with another one.
Before you guys get upset, she's asleep in the rocking chair next to me right now.

Speaking of veterinarians taking advantage, curious what everyone thinks of this:
About 10 years ago my wife & I were going to Richmond for the day, I was driving.
I straddled what looked like a rag in the highway and horrified realized it was a kitten, so I pulled off the road with my flashers on.
A tractor trailer was coming with truck beside it...certain death for the kitten so I ran full speed, grabbing kitten as I went to the other side. My wife crying thinking I got hit but I was fine.
She wrapped kitten in a towel and I took the next exit. Up ahead was a veterinarian office, it was Saturday about noon and veterinarian was was closing up. We explained what happened so he unlocked door saying $100 for a check-up for the poor kitten which I paid. Vet said call Monday after he checked it out but preliminary he said it seemed fine.
Monday I called, veterinarian said kitten was in perfect health and his daughter adopted it.
We think the veterinarian should have refunded my $100. Doesn't that seem fair?

One day early last year Percy started low crawling from one room to another. And this he seamed to be growling with a sound of pain. He had never been mean to me. And I never to him. And after a couple hours my wife and I decided he needed medical help. It was 11 pm. We found a nighttime vet ER about 45 minutes away. After a lot of questions and answers the vet checking him asked more questions and decided he needed to take a few x-rays. After sedating Percy and 5 xrays the doctor showed us that he had to turn him for the third one. The second showed he had displaced his right rear hip. The third showed it had replaced itself. Maybe being sedated and gently rolled over for belly xray helped. By 3am and $1000+ lighter we went home, carefully monitored him from a few days.

Thanks for the insight.
They managed to successfully remove the sweatshirt drawstring. It went from the stomach all the way to the colon. They got it out of stomach, but had to make one incision into the intestine to remove the last piece. He's in recovery now and we should be picking him up in the morning.
In the mean while, they said no jumping and no access to other cats. So I cleaned out a storage room I've been meaning to clean out and finish. Basement to second floor of the garage, I should have taken before pictures. Made a door real quick so we can keep him contained.

Ha. My cat also likes drinking from the sink.
My wife will pick him up, put him on the counter and run the water until the sink is 1/4 full.
He leans down and drinks.

Our black and white one jumps on the vanity and chirps until we turn the water on a trickle for her. She sticks her head under the faucet and drinks her fill. She does that 3-4 times a day. 
She's also the one that reaches into the food bowl and pulls a few pieces out with her paw and eats them off the floor. Repeat.
She's not all there.

Spicy was thrilled with herself when she realized she could jump from the Bobcat to the beam in the tractor shed.
They would sit on the grill waiting to see when I was up.
When I moved the grill they would take turns climbing the screen to see if I was up.
I learned fast to open the kitchen curtains before I went to bed.
