Is Elsa a Balanese cat?

Mocha(left) is balanese, elsa(right) is ragdoll.

Mocha went into the ER tonight. Threw up 3x today, then 3x blood this evening. They did xrays, and found his intestines bunched up. Their theory is he ate a drawstring from a sweatshirt. One that my wife used to play with him. Now it's caused an intestinal blockage. The ultrasound in the mroning will tell the story, but he probably needs surgery. The surgery will cost $7k to remove the string from the intestine. Recovery time is 2 weeks in isolation with a cone. So tomorrow I'll clear out the spare storage room in anticipation of him coming home and needing some alone time/space.

Ouch! From what I've been told, those linear obstructions are pretty common in cats. They eat strings, tinsel from Christmas decorations, dental floss, even human hair can cause it. Happens in dogs, too. We have a cat that eats about anything, so we have to be really careful. Even with that, she's had surgery twice.

Ouch! From what I've been told, those linear obstructions are pretty common in cats. They eat strings, tinsel from Christmas decorations, dental floss, even human hair can cause it. Happens in dogs, too. We have a cat that eats about anything, so we have to be really careful. Even with that, she's had surgery twice.

Ouch. If you don't mind me asking, how much was the surgery? I got a range of $5-7k.

First one was $4500 for a piece of rubber she chewed off of a handle for a stick with a feather on a string. It got lodged in her small intestine.

Second one 9 month later (grrrr!) was for a piece of rubber she chewed off of a handle for a hair brush that. It got lodged in her intestine as well. That one was "only' $3500 because we told them to skip some tests as we knew exactly what it was.

Our daughter and son-in-law are involved in the vet industry. They said linear obstructions like strings, shoelaces, etc are much harder to remove because they don't know how many places the intestines have bound up VS just an object that is in one place. They can't just pull the string out. They have to open the intestines in multiple places and work it out without damaging the intestines any more.

So I don't think your 5-7 estimate is all that bad, all things considered.
