I am about to put in the driveway at our new place. A fellow with a Cat 953 LGP was recommended. He gets $100 an hour and $150 transport fee. I like the guy and have watched him work for a neighbor. He doesn't take breaks or mess around. He just works. The neighbor was not there to keep an eye on him or anything like that.
The driveway will be roughly 700 feet long, require a lot of fill in one very low spot, and have three stream crossings, two of which are minor wet weather streams. It is all rolling woods, with side cuts necessary at the entry point in order to keep it from being too steep. Power will go down the drive. The utility requires a 30 foot cleared path.
The dozer owner suggests getting the fill off of the property rather than buying dirt and trucking it in. He has suggested three 3 foot diameter culverts, which I will have to purchase and have delivered or haul myself to the site.
He has a buddy that hauls rock for a living. He would use him to get the gravel from the nearest local source. He suggests 1 1/4" rock. He says he can compact the fill with the Cat and a roller would not be necessary, although one could be used, if I wanted to rent one.
He will clear the drive/power area by pushing the trees down. They will be shoved to the side. He said he could move them to a burn pile, but said the costs would be higher.
I was originally thinking of contracting the driveway's construction. This avenue is more like a cooperative effort with him doing the heavy work with his machine. It seems like this would be a cheaper approach than a contract.
Does the price sound fair, and is the Cat 953 LGP a good machine for this kind of work? All comments or questions are welcome.
Thanks,
SnowRidge
