Looking at a 257b with 820 hours with one new track and one I would rate at 50%. Current owner purchased on iron planet two years ago for 18,500. He has run it privately for about 150 hours and wants 18,500. Engine door has yellow writing that says Cat engine replacement @ 616 hours. A phone message back from my diesel mechanic said stay away from 257b, problems? My question is this, does anyone know what other problems may persist? I understand the engine was most likely replaced due to the oil feeder tube casuing engine failure.

Stay away....the undercarriage on these are a nightmare...rubber and plastic rollers..hard to adjust...walk away

Yup, great machines when they go good, but the undercarriage will kill you. Last I heard it was $5K to re-do the under side when the rollers/tracks go. I like renting them, but I'd go with over the wheel tracks if you're gonna own.

I will echo the warnings above that it is all about the condition of the undercarriage. extremely costly to rebuild, the asv components are just not made to handle a suspension-less machine like the cats. i've been told by folks i've employed about these cat machines needing extensive work in as little as 1000 hours. less if abused. i think you'd be better off if you can find a similar asv brand machine at a good price.

asv has the same poly/rubber undercarrige problem, look for a steel undercarrige machine, it will last a longer

but asv machines have real suspensions. the asv undercarriage was specifically designed for a machine with a real suspension. doesn't that make a difference? the owner of a local construction company that does work for me seems to think so.

which tracked skidsteer loader has an all steel undercarriage?

ASV signed a 10 or 20 year ( don't remember which it was) agreement for providing CAT's MTL undercarriages. So, Cat machines have an ASV undercarriage on them. Cat did just come out with a couple of model's that have an all steel undercarriage on them, other than the tracks. 279C, 289C and 299C.Models 277C, 287C and 297C have the old style rubber undercarriage. Not sure about the new style undercarriage ,but some of the old style machines had boggied bottom rollers which do ride alot better than the fixed bottom rollers.

Sincerely, Dirt

Son of a gun. guess i am all mixed up on this. i thought virtually all cat tracked skidsteer loaders new and old ran on asv components for a long time now.

sounds like i better stick to tractors. thanks guys for clarifying that.
