Case IH starter not engaging

Just bought a Case/IH 255 at an estate sale, got a heck of a deal, anyway the starter is not engaging, it will spin but not engage the flywheel, been sitting up for a couple years, any suggestions as to what to check,

I had that problem with my Ford.

Pull the starter, and check for rust on the bendix gear and shaft. You likely will be able to break the bendix loose, and it should work just fine. Perhaps a little WD40.

Low battery, bad cables, bad connections will also cause the bendix to not throw the gear out all the way. Could be a weak starter too.


But as mentioned........take it off and clean and lube.

Good point about the low battery or cables.

Tractors are often easy to touch the starter with (and selenoid) with jumper cables, although loaders often get in the way.
