Case IH 495 diesel tractor

my case Ih 495 tracter is emitting black exhaust.every thing ''seems'' to check out but the timing.the gears seem to be installed in the wrong position.the manual shows the gears but not the marks need help to set timing or am I missing a common problem from another source?

If you haven't already, try changing the air and fuel filters. Dirty filters can cause the black smoke.
