Case IH 245 Tachometer bouncing around and making whining noise?

I'm guessing I need a new cable. Any tips for replacement? Should I remove black instrument panel to access the back of the tach?

Should I disconnect at engine while operating until I get it fixed?

Do tachometer cables need any periodic lube?

The first thing to try is probably disconnecting the engine end. You may be able to pull the cable out of the sheath. If you can do this you can probably lube the cable, reinsert it, and put it back together with no further issues.

Apply some grease to the inner drive cable and reassemble it.

Pull the cable out of the wound shaft, use graphite oil on the cable,(grease is too thick) wipe off all excess at each end with a rag before reassembling.
Years ago you could buy a plastic lubricating attachment at the auto store. It fit onto the top-end, then you started the engine and the cable pulled the lubricant all the way through the shaft. When the container was empty, it was removed and the speedometer cable reattached.
