Carving a Valentine for Steph

Man, you have skill! That's awesome, wish I had skill like that. I guess it's another year of a card, dinner and maybe a Vermont Teddy Bear from the infomercial.

Eddie,

Very nice project you have going. Definitely think you will have tons of points to use later on down the road. Keep us updated on your progress and how Steph reacts.

Have a good one.

How thoughtful, and a spiffy design. Should you have made it out of chocolate?

Like all your projects, great job... bet it could be worth a new tractor some day.

Thanks for the kind words. I was kind of expecting somebody to mention how cheap I was for giving her a gift made from scrap wood, but I guess I got away with it. :D

It's kind of inspired from those Valentines jewelry comercial where you buy those diamon necklaces pendants from the mall jeweler. A big heart with the letters in the middle. Only I'm skipping the part with the diamonds.

This morning I started shaping the heart so the two layers would blend into one. My goal is to make it look like the heart part is thincker than the letters. I also want our initials to be flat and smooth in order to create contrast from the rounded shape of the heart and the letter L for Love.

After carving and sanding, I stained it all one shade of red oak from Minwax. Then I got this idea to rub some paint on over the stain real thin to give the stain a tint. I used the red that we have on our front door for the heart, and the black is from a coffee table that I made Steph before Christmas.

It's drying now and tomorrow I'll put a few coats of finish on it during the day before she gets home from work.

Thanks,
Eddie

Nice Eddie, I think it matters more that you did it (and it is nicer then something from the store in my opinion)

I bet she loves it.

Eddie,
I really like it with the red, that was a great idea, it looks great!
Might consider doing the bil L in red and E & S in black. You'll have to play around but i'm thinking I would like to see the Big L in red also, jsut an idea.

Cheap? Naw, especially if you consider the price of all the hours of loving work you put in to it! And, it's better than supporting Hallmark ;) I'll bet she likes it a lot better than some store bought thing!

I didn't post this before, but while I was working on Steph's carvings, I had two helpers who wanted to carve some of thier own. So when she got home last night after work, she had three carvings for Valentines!!!!

Hopefully the picture captures the moment. :)
