carb doesn\'t fit back on

I just finished putting new floats and a rebuild kit in the carb for my '41 A. I tried to set it back on the manifold tonite, but it doesn't fit!

When I took it of, it had a stud with a nut on one side(5/16). On the other side was a nut and bolt(1/4). I bought nice new studs to replace the odd bolt.

When I went to install it, the studs turned out to be wider than the holes on the manifold.

I first check the ears on the carb to ensure they were not bent. then I measured the carb. The holes are 1-1/4" on center. Next I measured the intake; the holes are 1-3/8" on center.

Does anyone have any idea's? This is just plain odd! Do I have a wierd mix of intake and carb?

The tractor is a '41 A. The carb is a Zenith. It has "B2" stamped on the bottom. On the top is a tag that reads "10850A" I did not see any readily visible marks on the intake.

I'm stumped and confused!

Re: carb doesn\'t fit back on

Robert,

I hate it when that happens, took me a week to put an oil pan back on one day. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Have a hot cup of milk and go to bed.

This is what my A manual says:

"Farmalls A, B, and U-2 series engines are equipped with either Zenith Model 161 or marvel-Schebler Model TSX.

I just went to the barn and measured mine, it's 2.375 inches center to center. I hope you meant 2" not 1". Mounts with two 5/16 studs with nuts on the manifold side. Manifold has no threads.

My best guess is the carb you have is from a later model with 2.25 centers. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

If you add A full 1/16 for the 1/4 inch bolt you replaced with the 5/16 stud your only a 1/16 away from a fit. Look at the manifold holes and see if someone has filled the holes to gain the additional room needed to squeeze it back togather. Also look at the original 1/4 inch bolt for the same file to fit approach.

The 1/16 to 1/8 throat offset of the carb with a 2 1/4 spacing should not make a difference on these old engines.

Good luck Al

Re: carb doesn\'t fit back on

Some years back, it took me 2 days to figure out how some brackets went together while putting accessories back on a old Ford I had when I replaced the water pump. A friend, who had only worked on Datsun's before, happened by and figured it out in 2 minutes. [shock]

Yes, it was 2-1/4; I measured from one of the inch lines on the ruler and didn't add up the offset /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif

It had/has 5/16 stud. The 1/4 bolt was very obviously out of place. Other than that, niether the carb nor the manifold appear to be modified. Oh, the carb had no gasket; they used some type of gasket sealer.

I would like to have this original if I can.

I wish I had a picture of a proper carb installed. I've looked on-line, and in the book I have, but no close-ups...

Re: carb doesn\'t fit back on

RobertN,
I might be a little off here and maybe Twinlle Toes can set me straight.

Sound like to me you may have a Hercules engine of 1939,and if so the Tillotson was the common carburetor.
The reason why I'm saying this my father restored his 1939 Farmall A for a winter project in 1995.
This I do know when it was time to replace the carburetor a gasket was sent.

Bates Crop.did wonders on parts also information.

Re: carb doesn\'t fit back on

Interesting... Any idea how I could identify that motor versus a standard motor? This one has the typical <font color=red>IH</font color=red> markings on it.

I already wrote a note to Bates Corp; I hope they can shed more light on this too. I've also posted to all the applicable boards on YTMag and ATIS.

Re: carb doesn\'t fit back on

RobertN,
Just got off the phone w/ my farther about the A carburetor, and he agree w/ Twinkle Toes that you might have to different carburetors...Farmall AV or B carburetor.

Also there no marking other IH on the motor, but some of the Bigger Farmall did have the engine company name on the but will hidden. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

Plus dad mention to check your intake manifod for leaks & rust holes & dirt,it will reduce your vacuum to the carburetor.
Dad was wondering if your going to change the electirc system, and if so Don't buy Farmall parts.

If I can ever put the coffee cup down I hook up this scanner {still setting in the box since May} I'll send you a picture of his restored Farmall A an H.

I would be most interested in your out come.

Take care out there.

Re: carb doesn\'t fit back on

Thomas,

I'm probably the wrong guy to set anybody straight. Your guess on what the mystery carburetor is sounds good to me.

Sounds like Robert is hedging on get it on vs get it right.
Scruffy would call this "Mug Wamping". Where the heck is that guy haven't heard nothing for a while, hope he and his family are doing well in Illinois.

Robert,
CT sells new and rebuilt carburetors for the A.
1-888-8CT-FARM. Hang on to your arms and legs. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif How long have you had your Farmall and what inspired you to dig into the Carb?

Re: carb doesn\'t fit back on

RobertN,
Dang it..sorry about no given you my father answer to your first question. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif
The old sevice repair manuals {the ones w/ the greasy finger prints} will have the engine info,or service man who knows engines inside and out.

Now as the print or say at the end of a talk show,"We shall not be held soley responsible for comments made" heck I'm the middle guy here. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Re: carb doesn\'t fit back on

Thomas,
My electrical system is simple; a kill switch and wire to the magneto. She starts with a crank only /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif I have thought about gathering the electrical system parts for her. I need to work on these other issues first though.

I do want to replace the manifold. While it appears to be sealed up ok, the threads for the muffler pipe are trash. they are hogged out and unusable. Tisco has them, as does Bates for ~$110.

Some more <font color=red>Farmall</font color=red> pictures would be great!
