Carb Cleaner

Can you use carb cleaner instead of starting fluid to start a cold diesel engine... my ford tractor needs a boost when it is really cold. Been using a small shot of starting fluid but I know it is dangerious for the engine. Thanks.

Wouldn't it be easier to install a ether system or a block heater? Carb cleaner would probably work but it's flash point is probably higher than alone.

There are a lot of sprays that would work. Many spray cans can be found in most garages that say flammable could substitute for ether. Even WD-40, Though I am not advising the use of any of them. I would agree to get a block or in line lower hose type heater if you are having cold start problems.

Doesn't really matter if it's a GM mechanic who gave the tip. I was a GM medium duty truck mechanic and I have never heard of anything so silly. Brake cleaner as a starting fluid has got to be one of the funnier ones. Many of today's modern brake cleaners are not even flamable.

I've used wd-40 to start and temp run for a few seconds a 353 with a bad fuel pump... probably safer than ether..

I use brake clean from Firsr Aid in the red and black can and it works as good as any starting fluid. This is the most flameble stuff I have seen.
