Car stereo question?

/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif I have a 1996 Ford Explorer. It has the factory stereo. The bass has gone out of the radio. Now the radio still works but there is no bass. Have you checked to see if the rear speakers are hooked up? Also.. some ford products used small amps right at the speakers..check for power.. etc.. fuses.. etc..

you can send these off to a service center for rebuild just like the dealer does. Search the internet for Ford stereo rebuild and the like.

I would just replace the radio with a good aftermarket radio. I replaced the radio and 4 speakers in my '95 F150 and improved the sound significantly. I think changing the speakers made the biggest impact. Ford radios of that era are easy to remove with a cheap tool.

If you want factory, I could see if the kid I sold it to last year wants to sell the factory radio I included. Assuming the 96 still uses DIN dimensions.

Have you checked to see that all of your speakers are working? I have seen this scenario when the woofer portion (ie voice coil) of a coaxial speaker has burned and is no longer functioning. The tweeter portion being the only part still working makes for a sound like the bass is gone.

Is it a CD/cassete/am/fm or just an am/fm/cassete?

I have an am/fm/cassette out of a 1996 Ranger, I think I still have it anyway. I took it out simply to put an aftermarket am/fm/cd in it's place.
