Re: Car milage \'comparisons\'

I'm a diesel fan as well, the point was not how fenominal it was to get 25mpg out of a car. It was mearly to point out that we can get this economy out of a full sized American car. That in itself is great. You could just about fit a Prius in the trunk of a TC. Plus it is impressive that this technology is 15yrs old.

As I've said several times on these boards, the future looks realy bright for diesel's. The technology is growing every year, we're not talking about your grandfathers Escort diesel.

Re: Car milage \'comparisons\'

It's a shocker to me, but my '00 Town Toad Cartier gets 31 mpg on the highway if I'm running 60 mph! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif If I kick it up to 72 mph, I only get about 26 mpg. I've checked it every tank for thousands of miles and that is what it gets. If I'm in town only, it drops to around 16 mpg. Honestly, that isn't too bad for a full sized V8 car.

1985 VW Golf diesel, low 40's, city driving.
1997 Suburban diesel, lowest I've seen 11 to a high of 17 which I think stinks for it. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Speedometer is off a little due to the bigger tires, but I still say it should do better.
1995 Blazer V6, about 15. I think it sucks. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif My uncle claims middle 20's with his, but I question his math!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Re: Car milage \'comparisons\'

Just to give a benchmark view of the past, I collect and restore old cars. These are highway averages for the ones I own.
1965 Ford Fairlane 500, 289 V8 ; 22mpg
1957 Ford F-100 Pickup w/300 Inline six ; 17mpg
1950 Chrysler 4dr sedan 251 six; 20mpg
1929 Dodge coupe w/208 six; 16mpg

The reason the oldest car gets the least mileage is due to the low compression ratio of the engine and low gearing. Top speed is only about 75 MPH.

1962 Chevrolet Biscayne = 6 mpg /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I can't believe that 502 ci engine doesn't get the same mpg the 6 cyl did. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Re: Car milage \'comparisons\'

1951 chevrolet 1/2 ton truck, 13 mpg, 50 mph top speed unless you could stand the noise of the motor at higher rpm: then installed a overdrive from another car, same gear ratio in the rear end( took the rear end from a 54 open drive shaft model chevy) and got 19mpg and drove it 70 mph.

1988 Avanti Convertible 12 gallon gas tank, 12 miles per gallon. I think MPG might be improved with a tune up but it runs great!

2005 VW Touareg V6, average seems to be 17mpg

2004 Volvo XC90T6, average seems to be 20mpg

2002 Mercury Mountaineer V8, average seems to be 16mpg

2005 Chevy Silverado V8, average seems to be 14 mpg

1996 Ford 3/4 ton PSD = 20 mpg
1998 Ford expedition = 18 mpg
2003 Mercury Sable Wagon = 30 mpg
And last but not least the hybrid killer = 2005 Yamaha Vstar 1100 as of my last fill up 57 mpg /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

All mpg are hiway averages no city. I pretty much ride the vstar everywhere now.

2002 Prius = 35-40 daily 1 mile trips to the mailbox; 46-48 highway; 50-52 city slow and go.

Lease is up and I'm selling for much more than I owe...and getting a new one cause it's a great small car that just happens to get great mileage.

Re: Car milage \'comparisons\'

Recent cars and trucks I have owned are listed below. I calculate mileage for every fuel fillup and write it down, so these numbers are pretty close to gospel. "All around" mileage figures are about 75% highway, 25% city.

2003 Chevy Trailblazer auto 4.1L 6cyl - 18.5 all around, 22 highway, we sold this about a year ago. Owned for 35,000 miles

2000 Chevy z71 extended cab 4wd auto 5.3L 8cyl - 13.5 towing, 15 all around, 17 highway. Owned for 96,000 miles and still have it

2000 Chevy Impala auto 3.4L 6 cyl - 25 all around with max AC, 28 no AC, 30.5 highway. Owned for 20,000 miles and still have it

1996 Dodge Neon manual 2.0L 4cyl - 27 all around with max AC, 29 no AC, 31 highway. We sold this about 3 years ago. Owned for 90,000 miles. Required premium gas.

And just one for fun.
1978 Chevy half ton 3spd manual 2wd 4.1L 6Cyl - 15.5 all around, 17 highway. Mileage dropped to 11.5 highway once it hit 200K. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif Owned the truck for about 12 years and only paid 2K for it used. Flat wore it out and sold it for $500.

Re: Car milage \'comparisons\'

I've got a Jetta TDI Wagon (Turbo Diesel) and get a consistent 43MPG no matter where I'm driving. That's about 550 miles between fill ups. Currently diesel is about 30-40 cents less that regular gas, but in the winter it closer to the price of premium. On average, I'd say the price is the same as regular. So far it's been a great car.

2000 Ford Excursion 4x4 w/ 6.8L V10
11+ around town, 14+ highway, and 9 (maybe) towing 10K pounds of firewood.

I need the towing capacity for the farm and by the time I register and insure another vehicle, I'll eat up the difference in gas mileage.

Re: Car milage \'comparisons\'

Wifey and I got out in front of this gas business /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

18 months ago, I bought a cheap daily driver - a 1997 Mazda Protege with 1.5 liter engine amd five speed. Gets 30 in town and 37 highway.

She traded her Pathfinder for a 2002 Civic. Gets 35 in mixed driving.

I traded my beloved F150 (14-15 mpg) for a 2000 Dodge Dakota with 4 cyl and 5 speed. Gets 20 in town, 24 on the road.
