Can\'t get the @#*&@ MMM Blades off!!

I am trying to take the mulching kit and blades off my BX22 and install new normal blades but it is like the blades are welded on. Does ayone have any helpful hints... I sprayed them with the penetrating stuff and will see if that helps over night. Also does everyone hereuse a torque wrench to get them back on to the right torque or...?? If so I think I will need to go shopping for a torque wrench tommorrow!

Thanks
Niles

Re: Can\'t get the @#*&@ MMM Blades off!!

I impact the nuts off and torque wrench them back on to factory specs.
They are bolts aren't they? /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Was thinking of my old Ariens I guess. Same procedure though.

I don't know the answer, but just to clarify for someone who might...sounds like you are having trouble getting the bolts loose, as compared to getting the blades off after the bolts are removed...right?

Do you have an impact wrench? I would guess not...but a compressor and some air tools might make life easier in the long run.

I would suggest that you might block the blades with a piece of wood or something, and then put a piece of pipe on the end of your wrench if needed for extra leverage...

A torque wrench will give no advantage for removal...it's main purpose is to give you an idea of how much torque you are putting on a bolt during installation, not removal.

4' of pipe on the handle of the wrench should work. I use a 2 foot section, works well for me. I use a torque wrench to put them on.

Are you turning the bolt in the proper direction????
just a thought you may have overlooked ( we all have done dumb things)

I haven't taken mine off yet..... what is the correct direction to remove... clockwise or counter clockwise..... looking at the blade and the head of the bolt????? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: Can\'t get the @#*&@ MMM Blades off!!

If you turn the deck over, you remove the bolt by truning from left to right after you block the blade with a piece of 2x4 to the deck frame!!

What you have just described would be a left handed thread and to remove you turn clockwise. Usually a left handed thread will have some kerf marks sawed into the head of the bolt to indicate that it is a left handed thread. I have just checked with the owners manual (took 10 minutes to find it) and the book says that to remove the blades, that the bolts are a right hand thread. You turn from right to left to remove or counterclockwise. This information is on page 19 of the owners manual. Also just realized for the first time that you are supposed to rotate the blade positions periodically.. I have never had my blades off, so tomorrow will be a MMM tune up day...

I won't argue with you but I would reread your manual,

Re: Can\'t get the @#*&@ MMM Blades off!!

The manual says, and I will quote it directly....
( The blade bolts have right hand threads. Turn them counterclockwise to loosen. )
No argument here either.... we are both here to learn.. I only asked the question because I wasn't certain the direction to loosen them and I didn't know where the manual was. Then I remembered that I had taken it to the garage to figure out how to level the deck and left it there on the tool box. Is it possible that the manual is incorrect?? I guess that I will find out in the morning when I attempt to remove the blades.
