If your birth county is a distance from you you can contact the county records by phone and they will let you know what you need to do. I got one for a job a few years ago without driving the 500 miles to get it.

Go online to your state of birth..Depending on your age, the birth certificate you had may be useless. I was only 42 and mine was of no use for a passport--Had to order a new one to comply with new regulations..Wasn't a big deal if you're not in a hurry...I was so it cost me dearly.

I memorized my SS# over 50 years ago. I've never been asked for the card, just the number. In fact my card says, "Not to be used for identification purposes."
