Hello everyone. I've spent hours reading all these informative posts but just now registered and this is my first post. I'm not sure if I'm putting this post in the correct category but here goes. I have a Long 460 that I bought about six months ago. It runs good but has a noise that I can't figure out.
From the seat it kind of rings or has a pinging sound from the muffler which is a vertical stack on the left side of the tractor. If you are standing on the ground and listen on the left side of the engine, it is more of a knock. If you are standing on the right side of the tractor you do not hear it over the noise of the injector pump which is on the right. My nephew who has driven the tractor a bit said he didn't notice the noise until I mentioned it so I would say it's not really bad but still bugs the heck out of me.
I let the engine idle and let a small stick rub the front crank pulley so I could feel the rpm of the crank while listening to see if the knock/ping was happening at the same frequency as the crank rotation. I believe the sound is at half the frequency of the crank rotation which leads me to something valvetrain. I adjusted the valve lash/clearance according to the maintenance manual and it does idle a little smoother now (the exhaust rain cap used to slap around at idle and lope a little) but still has the knock/ping.
I started the tractor today at 55 degrees after sitting for over a week and noticed that the noise didn't start until the engine had been running for about 3 minutes.
The tractor is a mid 80's model and maybe I am being concerned about nothing but if any of you have any suggestions or experience with this type of tractor, I sure would like to hear from you.
