You are right soil conditions make all the diffrence in the world. I have never worked in hard soils such as yours. I would hate to have to use post hole diggers there!!!!

Yes, a big pipe wrench is your best friend. I have threaded it in a few times.
Also usually takes a big buddy hanging from it just to get it started. Forget the augers with no protruding teeth. I bought a 9" one and had to make my own cutting teeth to get it to dig.
