Have you tried to cancel a landline phone recently? I didn't realize how difficult it is. Their computer voice receptionist doesn't give you this option. You get put on hold until you finally give up. The phone co. web site doesn't have an option for cancelling. I finally got someone late at night and then they wanted to know why, etc. Going to give up my remaining landline phone and go 100% cell phone - if I can :) Anyone else have difficulty with this?

I'm sure if you don't pay the bill it will get canceled.
Not sure who your local company is, but the recorded auto-answer systems can be a real pain. Try the option for adding service, then ask to be transfered? or a direct number?
Maybe a call to the Public Service Commission?

We had SBC and cancelling was unbelievably easy...to the point I was almost disappointed they didn't offer a carrot to try and keep me as a customer. I was spending ~ $50 per month to receive telemarketer calls....All the calls I wanted to receive were coming in on my cell anyway.

Keep on them....these guys are going the way of the horse drawn wagons....still have a use but there are better options...

I dropped my land line years ago. Couldn't see paying $42 a month for local calls when my local calling area was very small. Not paying a bill will always cancel something. After my divorce, auto ins. co. wouldn't take my ex off our policy without his permission. He wasn't going to give his permission! He never paid for anything in his life! Well, I just didn't pay the bill next month, insurance cancelled, no more supporting his sorry self.

For some real fun, try to cancel an AOL account (no I've never had one but cancelled 4 for others). The last approach was by far the best. Told the "consultant" that that the computer wire was channeling Demons into my house so I chopped it off at the pole and tied a knot at the end then burned the computer with charcoal starter. Apparently there was nothing in the manual that gave the proper "stall forever" response for this one and a cancellation confirmation number was handed right over.

I saw something on the news a while back about a guy cancelling an AOL account. He had the whole experience recorded, it took him like 40 some minutes to get it done. They really jerked this guy around, it was a real hoot. Thie guy was somewhat of a "meek" fellow so the AOL rep really got nasty & rude with the gut by the time he finally got it cut off. AOL said they canned the rep because he really was over the line with this poor guy.

I tried the AOL "free" ISP a few years ago... despite their claims of 98% coverage in the US it was a toll call from every town I ever worked in. (throughout ME,NH,VT,NY.)
The worst part is that their download took over my computer; the only way
I could fix it was to reformat my hard drive and reinstall my operating system.

Removing AOL is a tedious job - basically about the same as any other virus removal. And that folks, is exactly what I think about AOL. It is a multi-legged vermin that will take over your computer.

Simple removal does not work, as small parts are left scattered all over your drive and will, from time to time, be recalled and freeze the computer.

You must do a hand search for each vestige of the program and delete them.

My recommendation to one and all is to NEVER install AOL in the first place.

The easiest way for you to cancel your landline is to "port" the number to your cell phone. They get the hint

Had Compuserve (sp) for months and months... unlimited online service for about $14.95 per month debited from my checking account. Noticed a $600.00 plus debit from checking account for online service. Spent weeks trying to contact someone concerning this "stealing from me" but was unsucessful and stone walled each time. Only answer I could ever get was we sent you an e-mail changing our billing process (never got an e-mail) Biggest lesson I learned is to never again allow for auto debit checking account for anything.
