Can you weld new edge on bushhog blades or it is necessary to replace them.

My Dad once got the shop at work to cut up old truck springs to use on our Liliston 3 spindle cutter. Balance was an issue and they were not twisted like a regular blade.

G'day second what Jerry said for the cost of it put new blades on and new bolts/bushes if fitted I have seen on more than one occasion a blade/bolt failure causing huge damage to tyres/machines just lucky no one was around, my boss was out at a farm one day when they where slashing around the edge of a crop and had a blade come off he followed the line through the crop for about 120' and found the blade :shocked: would hate to have an ankle in the way !!

I'm with Jon & Jerry on this one. Unless you are confident that your post weld heat treat is adequate & that your welds are porosity & inclusion free (ie: you're certified welding on that material, with that filler rod) I'd just get new blades. Otherwise, the risk in terms of property damage and personal injury is really pretty high, considering the potential "savings". I say this as someone who would rather do it myself, but also as a former weldor and as a present designer of high speed rotating machinery.

My bushog has reversible blades for a fresh edge. The most welding i will do on a blade is to put in a piece of metal to "add back" some mass out on the old eroded edge that is being rotated out of service. The welded edge does no cutting, but the natural weighting, swing position, and hit force of the blade is restored. ... A light back edge will cause the blade to trail a bit reducing hit force.
