If so, what implement is the correct tool for this task?
I have a mowing account client that has a couple acres of field he would like mowed 1 or 2 times a season...It is fairly level and wide open...only a couple of brush "islands" here and there.
Was wondering if the income from the mowing would offset the cost of an implement. ( I know eventually it would, but having the client stay on with me is no guarantee season by season)

Is there a scissor type implement available for the BX? (like a sickle bar)

Just to clarify, you are just mowing to maintain this field and are not mowing it for haying purposes. Correct?

No haying...just mowing and leaving the cuttings in place.

Mowbizz - I have mowed a 5 acre horse pasture with the MMM under my B7500 (21HP) for 5-6 times per year since 2003. I mow an additional 2 acre hay field 2-3 times per year. I mow both with the MMM pinned up in the transport position, which is about a 6" cut. Prior to 2003, I used a 5' rotary cutter behind a Ford 8N. I would not say the MMM is the best implement for this job, but it is what I have, and it has worked for me. I actually prefer the MMM to the rear rotary cutter.

I think the Rotary cutter is a better choice. The cutter is designed to cut a variety of materials and designed to hit something unintended and survive. Much thicker blades and the ability to swing free make a big difference.

So a rotary cutter is the way to go...is this the same animal as a bush hog, or a brush hog?

What size width would you recommend for the BX24? Thanks for the replies..:D

I rough cut 4 of our 5 acres with a Gearmore 40" rough cutter on a BX2200. This unit is the only small sized "heavy duty" rough cutter that I am familiar with. I can sut stands of 2" sapplings with no loss of rpm. In one marshy place, weeds have been over 10' tall. Only broom grass lugs down the rpm, and I just have to slow the forward momentum a bit. I bought the unit in the year 2000 for $649.

If you are cutting nothing more than tall grass, I would recommend a 48" light or medium duty unit. For sapplings, my own experience with the hd 40" Gearmore makes it my recommendation.

A brush hog is aka rotary cutter and rough cutter. "Bush Hog" is the name of a manufacturing company that makes many different tractor implements, including rough cutters. Some people refer to all rough cutters as bush hogs, just as generic tissue is usually called by the brand name "Kleenex" and drywall is often called by the brand name "Sheetrock".

I used a 4-ft King Kutter rotary mower (aka brush hog, bush hog, slasher, shredder) with my Kubota B7510HST (21 hp engine, 17 hp pto) to mow about 8 acres of pasture land on my place. The mower cost about $600 at Tractor Supply.

Sicklebar mowers are used to mow hayfields for baling. These mowers also are used for mowing along highways. A few months ago a bought a 7-ft Massey Ferguson MF-41 sicklebar mower at auction for $550. It attaches to the 3pt hitch. Your BX24 (17.7 hp pto) could handle it. You can find Ford 501 sicklebars pretty easily locally or on craigslist and eBay.
