Can the hydraulic system get air locked after a fluid change

/ Can the hydraulic system get air locked after a fluid change #42
We have discussed a suction air leak as being the most probable culprit several times in different posts since a week ago. We even discussed how it can happen as rubber connecting tubing ages. The tubing cannot be reclamped, it has to be replaced.

Post #34 points to the exact spot. So are we back to a suction air leak again?

Have patience my friend.
For the experienced in these kind of problems it is of common nature to suspect certain things.
For the inexperienced, sometimes things have just to sift down but I commend the op in eventually finding a probable cause.
When a problem is posed remotely without the benefit of having the machine or the owner in physicality, most of the times its a guessing game as problems can be caused by several things.
Hopefully in time, things finally connect to resolve an issue.

Yeah, you're right. Long distance failures are just frustrating to diagnose sometime. If we could be there it would take less time to test a few things than it takes to talk about it.

I had the same frustration with our own mechanics back when i had a repair shop. So many mechanical problems are just simple things. The cusomer's machine often came in with nothing really broken that couldn't be easily set right. It only became a problem due to ...well, just call it "mechanical over-enthusiasm" coupled with a natural desire to expect the worst.

It used to drive me nuts when I would come in and find some customer's engine halfway apart - all because of not first checking for the simple things. Of course sometimes it is a real failure, but the other happens much more often than I ever would have believed.

Some how while cleaning up the dip stick is gone, vanished! Waiting for replacement before I continue. I want to be absolutely sure of fluid level. I'll let you all know how this turns out. Thanks

I think the problem is in the hydrostatic system.pump ,motor, relief valve or some thing . The main hydraulic pump is working fine. All implementation work as they should. It's the travelling that's a problem. It will move along for a short distance then stop. Both in forward and reverse. It like it is in neutral. Pushing foot pedal back and forth it will move again for a short distance. Any thoughts? Thanks,Len

Where is the charge pump on your tractor? Is it a separate pump or fed by the power steering? I would suggest checking your charge pressure to determine if that circuit is being fed properly.

I think I am in over my head.I'm a carpenter trying to be a mechanic.

It looks like your tractor has a built in charge pump with a suction filter (item 5 on 2nd picture) Did you replace this filter? If yes did you use an OEM filter or after market?

Some models of tractors are very sensitive to what filters are used and non- factory (OEM) cause cavitation problems.

Also need to triple check that the filter seal is not compromised and allowing vacuum leak.

I am more of a mechanic trying to be a carpenter- handyman so I feel your frustration…

The filter is from the dealer. Looking back now I realize the problem started before the fluid change. When this first occurred I checked the fluid level and it was a little bit low so I decided I would just do a complete fluid change.

I think Len this is getting too complicated for you to handle with expediency.
At the end of your clutch pedal travel there should be a valve with a plunger, this needs adjustment at times so the plunger is fully in. This will or should move your clutch pedal in.
I have also previously mentioned that a hydraulic pump can be in a certain degree of failure.
It can be good enough to work hydraulics but cannot move the tractor very well at all.
Then there is the wear factor that is created with heat.
The tolerances on a hydrostatic are very tight.
Any compromise on these tolerances can effect all sorts of problems.

I agree. This has gotten to the point where I'm way over my ability . Think I'll be shopping for another tractor. Thanks for all your help. Thanks , Len
