CNC Dan, i had already done it before your post. If i had it to do over I would have used individual doubled bailing wires for each wrap as what you see is one continuous wire threaded around the anchor points a couple of times . When i went to twist it to tighten it broke before all the loops got as tight as I was hoping, but it broke on the nonbusiness end u see in the pic, luckily . Any way it is tight and I mowed for about 30 mins without incident. If it loosens i will just do it again.

y'all also need to know that before I started this thread I knew the muffler cap was severed and I am so stupid I tried to mow anyway, I noticed smoke after a couple of minutes and figured the engine was about to blow and kept mowing thinking what the ****, after another minute or two I finally pulled over, lifted the hood, and found the smoke was from the wiring harnesses etc that were burning from the heat due to the muffler cap. Luckily the harness is only melted a bit and nothing shorted etc..., The throttle and choke cable were already history due to muffler heat because the shop that put this engine in didn't install the muffler heat shield and I hadn't realized that until a couple of years later when i investigated why the choke and throttle cables had gotten so hot they wouldn't hardly move anymore.

I'm glad to see you got it fixed. Your repair brings back memories. On the farm my dad used to be the master of temporary 'field' fixes with baling wire. He always managed to get the wire wrapped around the part where there would be no way for it to slip and then have the end neatly twisted with the excess trimmed off. Bit of an art to do a neat job.

Yes, Soundguy always knows the "real" way to fix things. I have this stupid mindset that says you have to "buy" something tho fix it.

If you do it again bog it up with a heap of silicone before tightening the wires. That will make it stronger and airtight around the join.

I'm kinda happy tonight, my usual course would have been to break something removing the muffler and spending hours on the net trying to find the right, cheapest replacement muffler along with whatever I broke/:thumbsup:

You could always "clean the out-side of the cap, then,, flip it around so the bubble is inside,,
then you may have a stronger , cleaner surface to spot weld it.
