I have hauled a 22,800 lbs load with my 2002 1 ton Chevy (gross 37,100 lbs), but I would not do it day in and day out, but the truck handled the load fine. I do have the MaxBrake controller and very strong electric brakes on the Big Tex. As you can see from the tare figure, the truck and trailer by themselves were 14,300 lbs.

A trailer heavy enough to take pounding down the road carrying a 14k backhoe/equipment full time may weigh close to 6500 lbs. Your looking at a minimum 20k trailer if its lightweight enough. A 22k works better.

The trailer registered 20k GVWR and a one ton DRW registered at 11500 lbs = 31500 GCW which is well over the 26001 GCW weight for a CDL and other legal requirements from your state for a commercial operation.

Be careful with the mid and late '00 GM DRW with those reduced 8200-8500 lb RAWR (soft rear suspension). In '10 GM raised them to 9375 RAWR and now at 9825 RAWR.

Dodge has the 9350 RAWR from '03 to '12 and 9750 RAWR on up.

Ford uses the 9000 RAWR till '12 and now 9650 RAWR.

As a camparo the F450/4500 size trucks use 11500-12000 RAWR but there GVWR is in the 15k-16k range so your in the upper 30k GCW bracket when a trailer is hooked.

I can't speak for other areas but around here a one ton DRW with a big GN trailer and back hoe is a favorite DOT target mostly for the correct paper work/licensing and registration.

There is a guy in my area that moves a 310 John Deere with a F-350. I don't think he has any DOT numbers on his truck either.

Move mine with a 250.

I've moved my 580k with a 1 ton drw. It can be done but it's a load and you have to get the weight just right. You'll also need to have ramps that have legs on them otherwise you WILL lift your rear axle of the truck off the ground when loading. The new Ram trucks are rated to pull the kind of load you're talking about but I think you're going to have a very hard time trying to stay under 26k.

I do't think I'd even go 350.. I'd go 450+

I 'tender' some large trailers at work.. and I can tell a difference when I move them with my 350 vs my 450.. suspension upgrades are a concern too. things like air bags vs overload or helper springs.. etc.

I agree on the 450 as I have a 97 and its slower but handles big loads much better along with the 16k gvw on the door.
or better yet get tandem with a tag so you can haul your demo work off?

I cant imagine anyone pulling a backhoe behind a pickup not being pulled over for CDL check. Its not even close to a farm implement especially running in the middle of town.

in my neck of the woods you'd need CDL regardless of 26K rules due to the commercial nature of the equipment being towed.

as to the OP question. a properly equipped 20K GN is what youll need and should be within limits of most 1 ton dualies

Around here its done every day. I had a 25,000# gvwr trailer with tandem duals. I pulled with my 99 Diesel SRW F350. Trailer was 6,500# empty and I pulled loads up to the max.

My neighbor has pulled his Case 580 for 20 years with a SRW Gas F350 on a 21,000# gvwr tri axle trailer.

Farm plates go a long way around here and even without if its for personal use the loa look the other way.

Same here in arkansas, we pull a 580 super m around behind a 3/4 d max, most here haul 450 dozers or backhoes behind ton and three quarter ton trucks. It is all about trailer and brakes, and driver common sense as far as I am concerned. Also most peoplle with Cdls , don't have enough sense to have them! LUTT
